DeJohnette worked with Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins and Charles Lloyd among others.

Born in Chicago in 1942, DeJohnette began playing piano at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, before picking up drums in his early teens. After early spells in doo-wop and rock’n’roll, his interests shifted into jazz, and from the late 1950s had his own trio.

Among DeJohnette’s many career highs, in 1968, he joined Davis’s band in time to play on Bitches Brew. During his time with Davis, DeJohnette also appeared on Live-Evil and A Tribute To Jack Johnson.

In parallel to his career as a sideman and collaborator, in 1968 DeJohnette recorded his debut as a bandleader, The DeJohnette Complex; his last album was 2017’s Hudson.
