Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, the irrepressible bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has died aged 63.
Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, the irrepressible bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has died aged 63.
Mounfield was a founding member of The Stone Roses, playing on their run of early singles, 1989 debut album and 1994’s The Second Coming.
After the Roses disbanded, he joined Primal Scream in time for their 1997 album Vanishing Point. His time with the band included their 2000 XTRMNTR album, as well as 2002’s Evil Heat and 2006’s Riot City Blues.
Mounfield left to rejoin the reunited Stone Roses in 2011, with whom he remained until their final break-up in 2017.
He also played in a supergroup band called Freebass with fellow bass players Andy Rourke (ex-the Smiths) and Joy Division/New Order’s Peter Hook.
Mounfield had recently announced plans for a spoken word tour.
