Recent coverage about the impact of AI on jobs has rightfully focused on coding and software development, since AI tools in these areas continue to make tremendous progress, and foundation model builders often track their progress through solving programming and mathematical problems. We also hear a lot about the impact of AI on knowledge work—marketing, writing and other creative tasks, customer support, and similar domains.

One group that I’m familiar with are data analysts tasked with research, analysis and writing reports. I recently described an interesting initiative to develop an AI assistant that mimics a renowned financial expert. While exploring this project revealed promising capabilities, a recent conversation with Leo Meyerovich, whose team at Louie.ai is building automation for what he terms “vibe data,” sharpened my understanding of what analysts truly need: tools that respect both rigor and improvisation.

Paradigms for AI Research Systems

Consider the common scenario where an analyst must research or investigate a topic and deliver a report about it. Automated research tools for analysts can be evaluated by comparing how they approach evidence-based briefings, which require the integration of information retrieval, logical reasoning, and coherent writing.

Stanford’s STORM  system originally followed a disciplined pipeline to generate Wikipedia-style articles, uncovering complementary perspectives and turning them into questions before retrieving and synthesizing evidence. The self-dialogue that powers this research is generated on the fly, not scripted, enabling each run to probe new facets of the subject. The trade-off is overhead: the multi-stage pipeline can miss information it never thinks to query, and every extra LLM-or-search round adds real-time delay.

Co-STORM extends this foundation into an interactive collaborative discourse system where users can both observe and participate in real-time conversations among multiple LLM agents—experts with diverse viewpoints and a moderator who steers discussion. Rather than just producing a static report, Co-STORM creates an immersive learning experience through its mixed-initiative approach. The system maintains a dynamic mind map to help users track the evolving discourse and discover “unknown unknowns”—insights they didn’t know to ask about. While the architecture introduces computational overhead and latency from coordinating multiple LLM calls and search queries, it enables serendipitous discovery through the emergent dialogue between perspectives.

Deep Research tools start with a goal rather than a pipeline. They roam through databases, news feeds, code repositories, and other sources, adjusting their strategy when new leads appear. The process feels exploratory—sometimes even circular—but it excels when the question is novel or poorly framed. These systems surface fresh angles quickly, though the very freedom that makes them nimble also makes their reasoning harder to audit. Analysts gain agility at the expense of reproducibility.

The contrasting approaches of STORM and Deep Research tools hint at distinct paradigms for AI agents handling automation tasks. These differences extend far beyond research and point toward fundamental design choices in how we build agents and AI systems for knowledge work.

The Scholar Agent paradigm, inspired by STORM’s methodology, emphasizes systematic decomposition with explicit planning phases. These agents excel at methodical task breakdown, perspective-driven analysis that ensures comprehensive coverage, and the production of durable knowledge artifacts like documentation and procedures. They integrate seamlessly with organizational knowledge management systems and provide built-in quality assurance through their systematic approach.

The Analyst Agent paradigm, drawing from Deep Research solutions, focuses on iterative exploration with continuous strategy refinement. These agents adapt in real-time to discovered information, produce decision-ready briefs and actionable insights, and feed downstream execution agents for immediate action. They excel at time-sensitive analysis, competitive intelligence, and executive briefings where agility trumps exhaustive coverage. However, this flexibility comes at the cost of requiring more post-processing validation.

Facilitator Agents sit between rigid pipelines and free-form exploration, orchestrating moderated, multi-expert conversations that surface “unknown unknowns.” By simulating round-table dialogue and letting users observe or step in, they reveal insights organically, building conceptual maps that show how ideas interlink as the discussion unfolds. This flow surfaces what matters without forcing precise queries, easing analysts’ cognitive load by presenting information and its relationships together.

Scholar Agents form the institutional memory, Analyst Agents supply rapid tactical intelligence, and Facilitator Agents spur exploratory discovery. The most effective systems weave them together: Facilitator Agents help teams explore new problem spaces, Scholar Agents document the resulting insights with rigorous citations, and Analyst Agents translate these insights into actionable intelligence for immediate decisions.

The Path Forward for AI-Powered Knowledge Work

Foundation models are improving across every axis that matters to knowledge work: reasoning, tool invocation and integration, multimodal fusion, and operating cost. As these gains accumulate, the boundary between Scholar and Analyst agents will blur; sophisticated planners will decide when to invoke structured pipelines, when to improvise, and when to blend the two in a single thread of thought. The implication is that human analysts will spend less time orchestrating tools and more time adjudicating among machine-generated perspectives, turning judgment, not retrieval, into their comparative advantage.

The medium-term outlook therefore favors hybrid agent constellations managed through policy, not code. Firms that invest now in provenance tracking, shared memory stores, and clear escalation paths will be positioned to let future models shoulder more of the cognitive load without surrendering accountability. In short, knowledge work is evolving from information retrieval, analysis, and synthesis into a practice of guided exploration—where human creativity and machine intelligence collaborate to uncover insights neither could discover alone.


Inspired by the Damodaran Bot, imagine a three-agent constellation for value investing. A Scholar Agent codifies the expert’s playbook—DCF templates, valuation rules, scenario frameworks—while an Analyst Agent sweeps live market data and peer comparables, running sensitivity and stress tests. A Facilitator Agent conducts Socratic dialogue that surfaces blind spots and invites human intervention. All three tap a shared RAG memory, keeping distinct viewpoints yet citing the same facts. The result—still a thought experiment rather than a working system—would fuse quantitative rigor with qualitative nuance, delivering recommendations complete with confidence bands and transparent provenance.
