\n\tThe pop star seemingly wasn\u2019t aware that it was the trilling vocal sound known as a Zaghrouta, a chant common to various cultures that\u2019s meant to honor and celebrate. (Music fans might recall Shakira expressed herself this way amid her 2020 Super Bowl halftime show<\/a>, while wagging her tongue at the camera ahead of singing \u201cHips Don\u2019t Lie.\u201d Shakira, who is half Colombian and half Lebanese, was paying homage to her Middle Eastern roots.)<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the Coachella livestream and in video recordings circulating the internet<\/a> of Carpenter on stage Friday in Indio, Calif., the Man\u2019s Best Friend <\/em> singer was seen sitting at the piano with a confused expression on her face upon hearing the sound, and heard saying, \u201cI don\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen someone in the crowd loudly called out, \u201cIt\u2019s my culture!\u201d Carpenter retorted, \u201cThat\u2019s your culture, yodeling?\u201d before adding, \u201cIs this Burning Man? What\u2019s going on? This is weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Saturday, Carpenter followed up on the comments she\u2019d made on stage.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cmy apologies i didn\u2019t see this person with my eyes and couldn\u2019t hear clearly,\u201d Carpenter wrote in reply to a post on X<\/a> that accused the artist of reacting in a way that was \u201cinsensitive and Islamophobic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe pop star continued: \u201cmy reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201ccould have handled it better!\u201d she said. \u201cnow i know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA Zaghrouta is often used by women in the Middle East and North Africa as a way to express joy, and \u2014 as explained by the educational resource Arab America<\/a> \u2014 is \u201cbest described in English as \u2018ululation.\u2019 It is a form of a long, wavering, high-pitched vocal sound representing trills of joy. It is produced by emitting a high-pitched loud voice accompanied by a rapid back and forth movement of the tongue.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tCarpenter headlined night one of the first weekend of Coachella 2026 on Friday. The lead slot comes just two years after the her debut performance at the annual festival \u2014 the time when she accurately predicted, \u201cCoachella, see you back here when I headline\u201d in an ad-libbed lyrical outro to her song \u201cNonsense.\u201d Since then, she\u2019s released two Billboard 200 No. 1 albums, 2024\u2019s Short n\u2019 Sweet<\/em> and 2025\u2019s Man\u2019s Best Friend<\/em>.<\/p>\n
