Military and intelligence contractor Palantir has long struggled to beat the allegations of enabling an Orwellian surveillance state on behalf of the Pentagon.<\/p>\n

The Alex Karp-led company has received huge sums<\/a> in federal funding to build out a surveillance platform for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with countless other contracts for military operations, policing, and border enforcement \u2014 not just with the US, but the Israeli military<\/a> and UK government<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n

Just in case its broader mission to supercharge national security using cutting-edge spying was too opaque, Karp penned a 320-page tome titled \u201cThe Technological Republic: Hard Power, Soft Belief, and the Future of the West.\u201d While the book itself was released just over 14 months ago, a 22-point summary<\/a> the company tweeted over the weekend put the firm and its controversial CEO\u2019s ominous worldview in stark relief, drawing shocked reactions.<\/p>\n

Belgian philosopher of technology Mark Coeckelbergh described the manifesto as an \u201cexample of technofascism<\/a>,\u201d while Greek economist Yanis Varoufakis warned that \u201cAI-powered killer robots are coming<\/a>\u201d in his reading of Palantir\u2019s \u201chideous ideology.\u201d Engadget<\/em> pointed out<\/a> that the summary \u201creads like the ramblings of a comic book villain\u201d \u2014 and we can\u2019t help but agree.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t take long for the red flags to shoot up. Karp calls for national service to be a \u201cuniversal duty,\u201d and for the undoing of the \u201cpostwar neutering of Germany and Japan.\u201d He also calls for \u201chard power\u201d at the expense of \u201cmoral appeal,\u201d and opines that people shouldn\u2019t \u201clook to the political arena to nourish their soul and sense of self.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, it calls for the \u201cWest\u201d to shed any sense of \u201cinclusivity,\u201d by resisting the \u201cshallow temptation of a vacant and hollow pluralism,\u201d closely echoing the far-right\u2019s repeated calls to end what it calls \u201cwoke\u201d \u2014 essentially inclusive and anti-discriminatory \u2014 beliefs. (As such, Karp told investors in November<\/a> that Palantir is the \u201cfirst company to be completely anti-woke.\u201d)<\/p>\n

The book also argues that the new world order will inevitably be determined by software and AI-driven warfare, and that \u201cviolent crime\u201d needs to be solved by Silicon Valley itself. (In reality, violent crime has been falling for decades<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a terrifyingly unambiguous rendition of Karp\u2019s worldview that, given his reputation as the \u201cscariest CEO in the world<\/a>,\u201d shouldn\u2019t come as much of a surprise. From supporting deportations carried out by ICE to developing software for autonomous strike drones<\/a> that\u2019s being used in Iran<\/a> to select targets, he and his company have long been shrouded in controversy.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, even former employees often struggle to explain what the Peter Thiel-cofounded software firm actually does, as Wired<\/em> reported last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In an open letter<\/a> published last year, several months after Karp\u2019s book was released, a group of former workers warned that \u201cPalantir\u2019s leadership has abandoned its founding ideals\u201d and that its original promises of protecting against discrimination and disinformation \u201chave now been violated, and are rapidly being dismantled at Palantir Technologies and across Silicon Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n

Protesters also recently staged a \u201cdie-in<\/a>\u201d by collapsing on the pavement in front of Palantir\u2019s offices, while brandishing signs with slogans, such as \u201cPalantir: ICE and war enabler and profiteer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karp\u2019s inscrutable personality has also drawn plenty of attention. Earlier this year, he acted erratically and notably struggled to stay seated during an interview, kicking off rumors that he was under the influence of drugs<\/a>. (The billionaire has previously joked<\/a> that working at Palantir can feel like a \u201ccult\u201d except with \u201cno sex and very little drugs.\u201d)<\/p>\n
