{"id":10467,"date":"2026-04-24T02:29:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T02:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/godsmack-sully-erna-interview-1236230469\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T02:29:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T02:29:00","slug":"godsmack-sully-erna-interview-1236230469","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/godsmack-sully-erna-interview-1236230469\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Definitely There\u2019s Gonna be a New Record:\u2019 Godsmack Crushes Retirement\u00a0Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA lot of equivocating and elaborating followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/godsmack\/\">Godsmack<\/a>\u2018s declaration in 2023 that it\u2019s ninth album, <em>Lighting Up the Sky<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/rock\/godsmack-lighting-up-the-sky-final-album-1235260149\/\">would be its last<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnd now, as the Boston-formed heavy rock troupe prepares for the release of its new <em>Live at the Mohegan Sun<\/em> album, next Friday, May 1, and this summer\u2019s <em>Rise of Rock World Tour<\/em>, frontman Sully Erna tells <em>Billboard<\/em> that there is indeed more to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDefinitely there\u2019s gonna be a new record \u2014 I just don\u2019t know when it\u2019s coming,\u201d Erna says. \u201cWe\u2019ll probably get some new music out by early \u201927, I suppose. I\u2019m starting to noodle (on new songs), but it\u2019s a little too soon to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSome significant things have happened since <em>Lighting Up the Sky\u2019s<\/em> release to bring about Godsmack\u2019s change in tone, none more crucial than guitarist Tony Rombola and drummer Shannon Larkin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/rock\/godsmack-retirement-guitarist-rombola-drummer-larkin-1235938640\/\">decision to retire<\/a> from the band following the tour supporting <em>Lighting Up the Sky<\/em> \u2014 \u201con good terms, but for no other reason than to fulfill their desire to live a more simple and quiet life away from touring,\u201d according to a statement by Erna during April of 2025. Erna said he and bassist Robbie Merrill were \u201cexcited to explore new directions.\u201d They filled out the band with Evanescence drummer Will Hunt and Dorothy guitarist Sam Koltun and toured in Europe during 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMe and Robbie sat down and had a long talk,\u201d Erna recalls now. \u201cWe contemplated kind of retiring the band\u2026but we were just like, \u2018We don\u2019t really want to stop yet. We feel like we have some gas in the tank. We love what we do.\u2019 (Hunt and Koltun) are strong, great players that really did an amazing job at honoring the music. Their attention to detail is perfect, (and) because the vocals don\u2019t change I really think people will enjoy the music and the brand the same as they have in the past, because that\u2019s really what it\u2019s about. It\u2019s about celebrating the music, celebrating the catalog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSo we\u2019re like, \u2018Let\u2019s run this thing and see how it feels.\u2019 Me and Robbie started this thing together a long time ago; it was just me and him to begin with, now it\u2019s back to me and him. We made a promise to each other in the early days \u2013\u2018we don\u2019t know what this thing\u2019s gonna be. Let\u2019s just write some music, get in the studio, have fun with it, and no pressure.\u2019 And the thing ended up turning into a multi-platinum brand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAnd now we\u2019re kind of using the same concept. We don\u2019t know if it\u2019s gonna feel good, not feel good, if it\u2019s gonna have longevity or if it\u2019s gonna die next week. But we\u2019ve got some gas in the tank now, so let\u2019s go out there and run it and see how it feels, see how people respond. Who knows; we might get surprised again and have Godsmack 2.0 for the next 10 years running, the second chapter in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Godsmack - When Legends Rise (Live at Mohegan Sun) (Official)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gkhr6fudqnM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGodsmack will give fans a hint of that next era with a new song before the<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.godsmack.com\/tour\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Rise of Rock<\/a><\/em> tour starts May 7 at the Welcome to Rockville festival in Florida, with Stone Temple Pilots and Dorothy also on board. Erna and company have teamed with Dorothy for a track called \u201cSet Me Free,\u201d which he describes as \u201can incredibly powerful and really straight-up, bad-ass, boot-kicking rock song. (Dorothy Martin) has a hell of a voice; she\u2019s so cool and smokey and bluesy. We were really up to do a song with her, so we jumped in the studio with Scott Stevens and me producing, and it\u2019s really cool. The voices work really well together. I\u2019m really excited to release that song and have that get out on the Internet and the airwaves and see how people respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<em>Rise of Rock<\/em> currently has dates booked through Sept. 26, mostly at amphitheaters and with a few other festivals in the mix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore that, however, Godsmack will drop <em>Live at the Mohegan Sun<\/em> via Primary Wave, an album and film documenting the Oct. 26, 2024 concert in Uncasville, Conn., that wrapped the group\u2019s <em>Best of Times World Tour<\/em> and was its last show with\u00a0Rombola and Larkin. \u201cIt was very emotional,\u201d Erna recalls. \u201cYou can see it on our faces, on the audience faces, \u2018oh my God, this is it.\u2019 I remember coming to the last song, \u2018I Stand Alone,\u2019 and we\u2019re getting to the final chords and my body started to lose it. It was so surreal; \u2018the song\u2019s going to be over in the next seven seconds, and I can\u2019t handle it!\u2019 I just remember hugging Tony on stage. It was just wild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn addition to the performance, the video \u2014 directed by Daniel Catullo \u2014 captures Godsmack offstage, including a post-show \u201cretirement party\u201d for Rombola and Larkin. \u201cIt\u2019s something I\u2019m incredibly proud of, because it came out so damn good,\u201d Erna says. \u201cIt looks amazing, it sounds amazing but more importantly they captured everything, all the emotion. It\u2019s also logged 13 No. 1 Mainstream Rock chart singles and was the rock artist of the year at the 2001 Billboard Music Awards, along with 16 Boston Music Awards and four Grammy Award nominations. And while he\u2019s keeping the band\u2019s recording future somewhat open-ended, Erna promises that anything fans hear will not stray too far from what they know and love about Godsmack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ll always be a hard rock band,\u201d he says, \u201cwhether we\u2019re gonna go back to the roots and put out a Pantera-style, heavy as f*** record or if we\u2019re gonna continue into this rock \u2018n\u2019 roll sunset that we\u2019ve kind of gotten into as we grew and aged and become better songwriters and better entertainers. I personally loved going back to the nostalgia of rock and bringing a little bit more of this traditional rock \u2018n\u2019 roll vibe to it, whether it\u2019s high-energy or more \u201970s-style rock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEither way, Godsmack has established ourselves to be the beast that it is, like AC\/DC (doesn\u2019t) waver too far from what they do. A lot of what we honor is always trying to be a good, tough, edgy hard rock band \u2014 not metal, not blues, just a straight-up hard rock band that represents big energy. It\u2019ll be interesting to see, with some new players, where the direction goes. Obviously there\u2019s gonna be a new flame, new inspiration, what their backgrounds are about and what they naturally play and how we incorporate that into the writing.
