Workers across the US have had it with the prognostications of AI taking over the world. And their unions \u2014 or what\u2019s left of them<\/a>, anyway \u2014 are taking notice.<\/p>\n

Last week, the leaders of some of the largest trade unions in the US came together for a conference with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Axios<\/em> reports<\/a>. Together, they presented a united opposition against tech companies pushing AI and robotics into labor, renewing Sanders\u2019 call for a pause on AI development until there are ample safety nets in place to catch workers whom labor leaders fear will be displaced.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are here to sound the alarms\u00a0on AI,\u201d president of stories AFL-CIO Liz Shuler said at the press conference. \u201cThis race that everybody seems to think we\u2019re in to advance AI at all costs \u2014 with no guardrails or protections for people \u2014 is reckless and dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

The horse race for AI dominance between tech companies in the US has had ripple effects for workers throughout the country. Though researchers haven\u2019t reached consensus<\/a> on whether AI is actually replacing jobs, workers are still feeling the squeeze as AI-happy<\/a> executives institute layoffs<\/a> and hiring freezes<\/a> regardless, as if to declare that the AI revolution is right around the corner.<\/p>\n

\u201cHuman beings have to come first in this equation, not an afterthought,\u201d United Auto Workers president\u00a0Shawn Fain\u00a0said. \u201cA handful of billionaires want all the profits,\u201d but the \u201cworking class has to get our fair share.\u201d<\/p>\n

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers \u2014 which, it should be noted, received $23 million in funding<\/a> from AI companies Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic \u2014 called for the federal government to put people ahead before tech. \u201cWe need the Congress, we need this administration to actually put people first, to make sure that the human being is in charge of society, not a robot and not a chatbot,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Sanders, who recently proposed legislation to halt data center construction<\/a> throughout the US, also unloaded some scathing comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe richest people on Earth \u2014 Mr. Musk, Mr. Zuckerberg, Mr. Bezos, Mr. Ellison and others \u2014 what they want to do is replace human workers,\u201d Sanders told attendees. \u201cSome of us are old-fashioned, and we believe in human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n
