\n\t\u201cAs a founding member of The Ronettes, along with her beloved cousins Ronnie and Estelle, Nedra\u2019s voice, style and spirit helped define a sound that would change music,\u201d the message continued. \u201cHer contribution to the group\u2019s story and their defining influence will live forever. Rest peacefully dear Nedra. Thanks for the magic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith Ronnie Bennett (later known as Ronnie Spector) and Estelle Bennett, she formed The Ronettes and recorded songs that would live on as classic pop staples, including the group\u2019s influential 1963 hit \u201cBe My Baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNedra, born in 1945, was cousins with Ronnie and Estelle, who were sisters; growing up in New York City, they sang together with other family members from a young age, and formed a family act they first called the Darling Sisters. They\u2019d rebrand as Ronnie and the Relatives before ultimately becoming the trio known as The Ronettes.<\/p>\n

\n\tTogether they auditioned for Philles Records and legendary producer Phil Spector in 1963, after establishing their performance style at live gigs in the city but seeing little success with their earliest records released through Colpix Records.<\/p>\n

\n\tWith Philles, \u201cBe My Baby\u201d \u2014 co-written by Phil with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich,\u00a0and led by Ronnie\u2019s signature vocal \u2014 became The Ronettes\u2019 breakthrough single, peaking at No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 1963. \u201cBe My Baby\u201d remains their highest-charting song. <\/p>\n

\n\tAmong The Ronettes\u2019 discography are the singles \u201cBaby I Love You,\u201d which reached No. 24 on the Hot 100 in 1963, and \u201cWalking in the Rain,\u201d which peaked at No. 23 in 1964. They released just one full-length album, 1964\u2019s Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe single that would land The Ronettes their second-highest chart position was a recording of the Christmas standard \u201cSleigh Ride,\u201d climbing up the Hot 100 all the way to No. 8 \u2014 though not until 2023, 60 years after its original 1963 release on Phil Spector\u2019s A Christmas Gift for You<\/em> compilation.<\/p>\n
