{"id":10557,"date":"2026-04-27T14:43:51","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T14:43:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/sam-altman-shooting-apology\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T14:43:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T14:43:51","slug":"sam-altman-shooting-apology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/sam-altman-shooting-apology\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Altman Issues Grim Apology"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">In February, an 18-year-old named Jesse Van Rootselaar killed eight people and herself \u2014 while wounding dozens more \u2014 in a rampage that started at her home and continued at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Investigators later learned that Van Rootselaar\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/chatgpt-tumbler-ridge-shooter-account-police-9.7107569\">ChatGPT account<\/a> had been flagged and banned by OpenAI\u2019s staff for describing \u201cscenarios involving gun violence\u201d \u2014 many months before the massacre took place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Yet OpenAI failed to notify law enforcement, raising thorny ethical questions regarding the pervasive role the tech plays in modern society and how it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/certain-chatbots-worse-ai-psychosis-study\">facilitating plenty of highly troubling behavior<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/chatgpt-mental-health-crises\">stalking<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/florida-mass-shooter-chatgpt\">violence and murder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Now, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a grim apology, admitting that the firm has fallen short of its responsibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cI am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June,\u201d he wrote in an open <a href=\"https:\/\/tumblerridgelines.com\/2026\/04\/24\/openai-apologizes-to-tumbler-ridge\/\">letter<\/a>, dated April 23, and addressed to the Tumbler Ridge community. \u201cWhile I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognize the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cI want to express my deepest condolences to the entire community,\u201d he wrote. \u201cNo one should ever have to endure a tragedy like this. I cannot imagine anything worse in this world than losing a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">BC premier David Eby was left unimpressed by Altman\u2019s mea culpa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThe apology is necessary, and yet grossly insufficient for the devastation done to the families of Tumbler Ridge,\u201d he replied in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dave_eby\/status\/2047751590803886291\" rel=\"nofollow\">tweet<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">In the aftermath of the event, OpenAI vowed to make changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cMental health and behavioural experts now help us assess difficult cases, and we have made our referral criteria more flexible to account for the fact that a user may not discuss the target, means and timing of planned violence in a ChatGPT conversation but that there may be potential risk of imminent violence,\u201d OpenAI head of global policy Ann O\u2019Leary <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.openai.com\/pdf\/8e938d69-0b67-4994-b9ff-683733ed587e\/openai-letter-minister-solomon.pdf\">wrote in a letter<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cWith the benefit of our continued learnings, under our enhanced law enforcement referral protocol, we would refer the account banned in June 2025 to law enforcement if it were discovered today,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">In his latest apology, Altman similarly promised to \u201cfind ways to prevent tragedies like this in the future\u201d by working with \u201call levels of government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The Tumbler Ridge shooting wasn\u2019t the only recent bloodbath to involve ChatGPT.
