A man in Colorado might not have done anything wrong, but that hasn\u2019t stopped the AI surveillance state from casting him into a dystopian \u201cGroundhog Day\u201d of police harassment.<\/p>\n

Kyle Dausman, a resident of Cherry Hills Village on Denver\u2019s south side, has been trapped in what must feel like a Kafkaesque loop after his truck was flagged by Flock Safety\u2019s automatic license plate readers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Whenever Dausman leaves his home, he told local channel 9News<\/em><\/a>, he\u2019s harangued by local cops, who are automatically alerted to the presence of an active vehicle with an outstanding warrant by Flock. <\/p>\n

\u201cI continually get pulled over. I can\u2019t really use my truck in any fashion. I believe my safety is at risk,\u201d the Colorado man told local reporters. \u201cThey zipped out of nowhere and immediately got behind me with the lights flashing.\u201d<\/p>\n

When 9News<\/em> spoke to Cherry Hills Village Police, officers confirmed Dausman has done nothing wrong. What\u2019s happening, they said, was that the man\u2019s license plate was erroneously connected to a warrant in the Colorado Crime Information Center database. <\/p>\n

Flock, the AI-surveillance company whose license plate reading cameras (ALPRs) are overtaking the US<\/a>, has hundreds of always-on devices in the Denver area alone. Arapahoe County, where Cherry Hills Village is located, has at least 283 active cameras documented on DeFlock<\/a>, a grassroots tool used for tracking ALPR deployments.<\/p>\n

Though it only took police in Cherry Hills a couple stops to realize Dausman was innocent and take him off their alert list, the proliferation of ALPRS in the surrounding area makes it nearly impossible for him to travel anywhere else without getting stopped ad nauseum.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverywhere in the state, every time I pass a camera, they get alerts in their car that I\u2019m in the area,\u201d Dausman said.<\/p>\n

Per 9News<\/em>, the phantom warrant seems to trace back to a data entry error in a warrant issued out of Gilpin County, Colorado. When Dausman tried to fix the issue by contacting the Gilpin County court system, he hit a wall: officials said he\u2019d need to provide the name of the suspect from the erroneous warrant, which no law enforcement agency would share, because the case was still active.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you\u2019re in the Flock system, it\u2019s on you to get out. You have to bear any responsibility for making that happen,\u201d Dausman told reporters.<\/p>\n

Now that his truck is marked, there\u2019s no telling what kind of trouble he could run into on the road. The black mark of Flock means he could face costly delays on his way to appointments or work. As he has no idea what\u2019s on the warrant, Dausman has no way of knowing how violently some police may react when they pull him over.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I know is I\u2019m in the system now,\u201d the Colorado man concluded. \u201cAnd there\u2019s really no easy way to get out of the system once you\u2019re in it.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
