\n\tDonald Trump is claiming that his dance moves to the Village People<\/a>\u2019s \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d helped drive a resurgence of the song on the Billboard<\/em> charts.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a speaking engagement at The Villages retirement community in Florida on Friday (May 1), the U.S. president took credit for the 1970s smash hit topping Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Top Dance\/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart in late 2024, more than four decades after its original release.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat song was No. 5 32 years ago, and it went to No. 1 32 years later,\u201d Trump incorrectly stated<\/a> during his speech. \u201cIt went to No. 1 for months during the last months of the campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe ubiquitous disco-era track \u2014 described by Trump as the \u201cgay national anthem\u201d \u2014 was frequently used during his 2024 presidential campaign and spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Top Dance\/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart that November. Following its original release in late 1978, \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn December 2024, Village People founder Victor Willis spoke out<\/a> about why he allowed Trump to use \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d at rallies and events leading up to his election win. The musician originally asked<\/a> Trump to stop using the song in 2020 but later reconsidered after realizing that the politician seemed to \u201cgenuinely like\u201d it and was \u201chaving a lot of fun\u201d with \u201cY.M.C.A.,\u201d he wrote in a lengthy Facebook post<\/a> in late 2024. Willis also noted that the dance tune has only \u201cbenefited greatly\u201d in terms of chart placements and sales since Trump incorporated it into his campaign.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTherefore, I\u2019m glad I allowed the President Elect\u2019s continued use of Y.M.C.A.,\u201d Willis wrote. \u201cAnd I thank him for choosing to use my song.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring his speech on Friday, Trump also noted that his wife, Melania Trump, isn\u2019t a fan of his onstage reaction to \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d \u201cShe hates when I dance to what is sometimes referred to as the gay national anthem,\u201d the president said. \u201cShe hates it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cWe love that song. But [Melania] goes, \u2018Darling, please.\u2019 You know, she\u2019s a very elegant woman. She goes, \u2018Darling, please don\u2019t dance. It\u2019s not presidential.\u2019 I said, \u2018It may not be presidential, but I\u2019m leading by 20 points in the polls or something.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump ended his speech by showcasing his signature dance \u2014 featuring fist pumps and hip shakes \u2014 as \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d played at the close of his address at the Florida retirement community.<\/p>\n
