Williams didn\u2019t list a cause of death, though he reported the basic circumstances of the death. \u201cRoger Nichols passed away peacefully four days ago, at home with his beautiful family \u2026his wife Terry and the daughters he was so proud of, Claire and Caitlin at his side.\u201d (See full text of Williams Instagram post below.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNichols signed as an artist to A&amp;M Records in 1968, a year before Karen and Richard Carpenter were signed to the Los Angeles-based label. His debut album <em>Roger Nichols and the Small Circle of Friends<\/em> was produced by Tommy LiPuma, engineered by Bruce Botnick, and featured session contributions from Van Dyke Parks, Randy Newman and Lenny Waronker. Although the album failed to crack the Billboard 200, A&amp;M co-founder <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/herb-alpert\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/herb-alpert\/\">Herb Alpert<\/a> thought there was something there and recommended that Nichols be hired by A&amp;M\u2019s publishing company as a staff songwriter. It was during this period that he was introduced to Williams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat was a characteristically astute call on Alpert\u2019s part. Williams and Nichols were one of the hottest pop songwriting teams of the early 1970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWilliams and Nichols took off as songwriters in the fall of 1970, when they had two songs in the top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time. On the charts dated Oct. 17 and 24, Carpenters\u2019 version of \u201cWe\u2019ve Only Just Begun,\u201d a ballad which had originated as \u201csoft-sell\u201d commercial for Crocker-Citizens National Bank, was in the top five (on its way to a No. 2 peak). Three Dog Night\u2019s \u201cOut in the Country\u201d was holding at its No. 15 peak.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"carpenters -We've Only Just Begun\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/__VQX2Xn7tI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Carpenters smash, an instant standard, was lushly romantic. The Three Dog Night hit was a fresh-sounding mix of pop, rock and folk. Having two simultaneous hits by two different acts in two different styles caught the industry\u2019s attention. \u201cWe\u2019ve Only Just Begun\u201d went on to receive two Grammy nominations \u2013 for song of the year and best contemporary song \u2014 at the first live Grammy telecast in March 1971. (It lost both awards to Paul Simon\u2019s \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water.\u201d) The Carpenters\u2019 recording of the song was voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWilliams and Nichols continued writing songs for the Carpenters, including \u201cRainy Days and Mondays,\u201d a superb and remarkably adult ballad which reached No. 2 (it took Carole King\u2019s letter-perfect \u201cIt\u2019s Too Late\u201d to keep it out of the top spot), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Gs6RRYvi_jE\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Gs6RRYvi_jE\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLet Me Be the One\u201d<\/a> (another first-rate ballad that the duo never got around to releasing as a single), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vOajXAaD-yg\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vOajXAaD-yg\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cI Won\u2019t Last a Day Without You,\u201d <\/a>a 1972 album track that was finally released as a single in 1974, when it climbed to No. 11.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carpenters - Rainy Days And Mondays\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PjFoQxjgbrs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/barbra-streisand\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/barbra-streisand\/\">Barbra Streisand <\/a>covered <a rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sKx1hMVdVIY\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sKx1hMVdVIY\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cI Won\u2019t Last a Day Without You\u201d<\/a> on her <em>ButterFly<\/em> album later in 1974. On her following album, <em>Lazy Afternoon<\/em>, she recorded another Williams-Nichols song, <a rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ko_tVrxPxys\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ko_tVrxPxys\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cI Never Had It So Good.\u201d<\/a> Both of those albums went gold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/art-garfunkel\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/art-garfunkel\/\">Art Garfunkel<\/a> recorded a tender Williams-Nichols song, <a rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E2Tu6ztODOs\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E2Tu6ztODOs\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTraveling Boy,\u201d<\/a> for his first solo album, 1973\u2019s <em>Angel Clare<\/em>, which made the top 10 on the Billboard 200. The song was released as the third single from the album, and bubbled under the Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNichols also had some successes with other collaborators. He teamed with William Lane to write \u201cTimes of Your Life,\u201d which <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/paul-anka\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/paul-anka\/\">Paul Anka<\/a> recorded in 1975. Like \u201cWe\u2019ve Only Just Begun,\u201d this song was also adapted from a popular TV commercial \u2013 for Kodak. Anka\u2019s recording reached No 7 on the Hot 100 in February 1976.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1976 HITS ARCHIVE: Times Of Your Life - Paul Anka (stereo 45--#1 A\/C)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7Gaov1MHX0k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNichols retired soon afterwards, but his songs live on. <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/r.e.m\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/r.e.m\/\">R.E.M.<\/a> covered <a rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3O8phwDQ1OE\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3O8phwDQ1OE\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOut in the Country\u201d <\/a>as a B-side for their 2003 single\u00a0\u201cBad Day.\u201d <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/rumer\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/rumer\/\">Rumer<\/a> covered <a rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hy6qhjJkV_Y\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hy6qhjJkV_Y\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTraveling Boy\u201d<\/a> on her 2012 album <em>Boys Don\u2019t Cry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNichols was honored during Florida Chapter Presents The Recording Academy Honors 2006 at Loews Miami Beach Hotel in Miami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe was nominated for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/awards\/2025-songwriters-hall-of-fame-nominees-full-list-eminem-janet-jackson-nwa-1235824078\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/awards\/2025-songwriters-hall-of-fame-nominees-full-list-eminem-janet-jackson-nwa-1235824078\/\">Songwriters Hall of Fame<\/a> on Nov. 12, for the class that will be inducted on June 12. He made it easy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter many wonderful productive years, I wanted us to write songs for movies. He had another dream. He said I wanna go fishing \u2026 wanna go back to Montana. He smiled and said something about having a family and maybe making a home by a nice little river\u2026 it was clear that he was already gone. A few years ago, I visited him and met Terry and the girls at the house by the river \u2026and I knew he found his dream.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne last story. Roger was really excited when his daughter Caitlin was getting married last September.
