Next year things might look a bit different for Miley Cyrus<\/a>, who says in a conversation with The New York Times<\/em> that she\u2019s looking forward to a \u201crebirth of how I look at my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked about her relationship with mainstream success, Cyrus, who just released her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful<\/em>, spoke of what she sees next for herself as an artist.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think it\u2019s winding down, my attachment to mainstream success,\u201d Cyrus said in the video interview, published on Saturday, May 31. (A shortened version of the full interview was published on the outlet\u2019s website<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI kind of feel like this album, it\u2019s definitely not a \u2018last lap\u2019 \u2014 I\u2019m definitely not going 180 in my career necessarily right now \u2014 but I think it\u2019s potentially the last time I\u2019ll do it exactly this way,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe singer announced Something Beautiful<\/em> in March, when she gave fans a first listen to album track \u201cPrelude\u201d and the set\u2019s title track. She\u2019s since released two more singles, \u201cEnd of the World\u201d and \u201cMore to Lose,\u201d and just before the album\u2019s release held a private concer<\/a>t hosted by TikTok at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. Still to come is a visual component to the project, a film set to show in theaters for\u00a0one night only\u00a0on June 12 in the United States and Canada, and internationally on June 27.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tCyrus \u2014 whose previous full-length release, 2023\u2019s\u00a0Endless Summer Vacation<\/em>, reached No. 3 on the\u00a0Billboard 200<\/a> \u2014 said, \u201cI\u2019m taking a big bet on this one [Something Beautiful<\/em>]. I\u2019m all in. But I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll put myself in a position that I add this much pressure to myself again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA lot of things are going to change about that for me, towards the end [of this year] and the beginning of next year. That\u2019s really kind of my focus, of using this year to kind of wind that idea I\u2019ve had of myself down. There\u2019s a song on the album called \u2018Reborn\u2019 and it\u2019s kind of about this. I feel like next year for me is gonna be kind of this rebirth of how I do things and how I look at my career,\u201d said Cyrus.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe conversation clocked in at nearly an hour, between Cyrus\u2019 in-person sit-down with the publication and a follow-up call. Among the many topics discussed with candor: her present-day relationship with each parent (Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus), whether she\u2019s interested in being a parent one day, what happened when she did E.M.D.R. therapy, growing up as a child star and why finally winning her first Grammy (for \u201cFlowers,\u201d in 2024) was so significant, and \u2014 when interviewer Lulu Garcia-Navarro brought up Cyrus\u2019 peers in the industry \u2014 her rapport with other female pop stars.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI find the relationship between female pop stars to be really interesting and often very fraught,\u201d Garcia-Navarro suggested, to which Cyrus joked: \u201cDivas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIs that what you think is happening?\u201d she asked Cyrus.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI mean, probably on my end,\u201d the singer said, and then clarified, \u201cI don\u2019t mind the word diva. Maybe I\u2019m a little diva.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCyrus added, \u201cIt\u2019s kind of cool. It\u2019s a fantasy. You don\u2019t have to be famous to be a diva \u2014 just be a diva. Diva does not mean difficult for no reason.\u201d When asked whether she thinks she\u2019s <\/em>difficult, she quipped: \u201cI\u2019m difficult, but not for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe interviewer followed up by prompting, \u201cYou have said you don\u2019t feel part of the cohort of singers of your generation and age group \u2026 You\u2019ve held yourself apart in a certain way.\u201d She asked Cyrus why.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s so much of a conscious choice,\u201d Cyrus said. \u201cI think for me, my persona \u2014 the public\u2019s idea of me \u2014 is \u2018on,\u2019 in some way, but in my own time, I\u2019m very off. I like no makeup, my hair up messy. I don\u2019t even look in the mirror in my own time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s not that I haven\u2019t found it,\u201d she said. \u201cI haven\u2019t looked very hard. I\u2019m sure girls in my community are going like, \u2018Well, that\u2019s me too and you haven\u2019t reached out.\u2019 No, I haven\u2019t \u2026 I like doing my two worlds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCyrus related her real life to that of her teenaged Hannah Montana persona.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMaybe it\u2019s something subconsciously from the show, like from Hannah Montana<\/em> where I think my famous person has one life and then as a regular person I have another life,\u201d she explained. \u201cI think maybe subconsciously it programmed me \u2014 not even joking \u2014 to think who I am at home and who I am as a performer are kind of like two separate identities, and actually they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in the conversation the former Disney star talked about the younger generation of pop singers, including Sabrina Carpenter, whom she\u2019s met and sometimes worries about due to the hectic schedule the \u201cEspresso\u201d hitmaker keeps. \u201cEvery time I see her I have the urge to ask her if she\u2019s OK. I\u2019ll see she\u2019s performing in Ireland, and then the next day she\u2019s doing a show in Kansas. And I\u2019m like, \u2018I don\u2019t know how that could be physically OK,\u2019 because I was in that situation. I know what it feels like to fry yourself, and I don\u2019t want anyone else to get fried. But I like all the new girls. I think they\u2019re all unique and are very found,\u201d Cyrus said.<\/p>\n
