\n\tNezza, a Latin pop singer of Colombian-Dominican origin who grew up in the Bay Area of California, was invited to perform the U.S. national anthem at this weekend\u2019s Dodgers vs. Giants game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Instead of singing in English, as she was apparently instructed to do, Nezza performed a Spanish-language rendition of the national anthem \u2014 \u201cpara mi gente [for my people],\u201d she said on Sunday (June 15).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe vocalist, dancer and content creator, whose full name is Vanessa Hern\u00e1ndez, posted a vide<\/a>o<\/a> <\/a>o<\/a>n<\/a> <\/a>s<\/a>o<\/a>c<\/a>i<\/a>a<\/a>l<\/a> <\/a>m<\/a>e<\/a>d<\/a>i<\/a>a<\/a>, showing her perspective of what happened at the L.A. event.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure if that wasn\u2019t relayed,\u201d an off-camera voice can be heard telling Nezza, whose crestfallen expression and body language show the singer\u2019s dismay. The clip goes on to show footage of Nezza on the baseball field, overcome with emotion as she belts the last line of \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d \u2014 \u201cEl Pend\u00f3n Estrellado\u201d \u2014 en espa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPara mi gente,\u201d Nezza wrote in the caption, \u201cI stand with you. Yesterday was easily one of the scariest days of my life. I sang \u2018El Pendon Estrellado\u2019 the OFFICIAL Spanish star spangled banner (commissioned by President Roosevelt) at the Dodgers game after being told I couldn\u2019t. And I\u2019m so proud that I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cStay safe. Stay strong. I love you,\u201d said Nezza, who is expected to release her debut full-length album this year.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a follow-up video uploaded to TikTok<\/a>, she spoke to the camera and reflected on the experience, her teary eyes still red: \u201cBear with me, \u2019cause I\u2019m still very shooken up and emotional.\u201d Of the Spanish translation of the national anthem, \u201cEl Pend\u00f3n Estrellado,\u201d she explained, \u201cIt was officially commissioned in 1945 by the U.S. State Department as a part of President Franklin Roosevelt\u2019s good neighbor policy to foster a better relationship with Latin America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI didn\u2019t think I would be met with any sort of \u2018no,\u2019 especially because we\u2019re in L.A., and with everything happening \u2026 I just could not believe when she walked in and told me \u2018no.\u2019 I just felt like I needed to do it,\u201d Nezza said.<\/p>\n
