GRiZ<\/a>\u00a0has released a new mixtape,\u00a0Sidequest Vol. 1<\/em>, a\u00a022-track odyssey of funk-fueled basslines and heavy-hitting drops.<\/p>\n

After a two-year hiatus that left fans wondering if the superstar producer would ever return to the stage, GRiZ has reemerged in full technicolor. His new project has dropped on SoundCloud as a 50-minute mixtape, a sprawling tapestry that fuses unreleased tracks, remixes, edits and flips into one jam-packed listen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sound of an artist freshly unshackled., Sidequest Vol. 1<\/em> plays like a love letter to GRiZ\u2019s time-tested sound while charting new territory in multi-genre experimentation. Layered funk riffs collide with psychedelic basslines, brass stabs slice through thick drums and dubstep growls chew through ecstatic festival drops.<\/p>\n

Framed as a “side quest” to the main GRiZ narrative, the release plays out like a high-stakes video game companion story. The project is an extension of a fantasy RPG-inspired campaign<\/a> GRiZ launched earlier this month, and in true DnD<\/em> fashion, fans could roll a virtual 20-sided die on a custom-built, turn-based game to unlock previews which are revealed only after besting the game’s digital foes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
