\n\tChuy Montana\u2019s story began at the border \u2014 but his voice carried far beyond its lines. Found busking with his guitar for traffic-bound listeners at the Tijuana-San Ysidro crossing, Jes\u00fas C\u00e1rdenas (real name) was discovered by JOP of Fuerza Regida, whose belief in Chuy\u2019s talent led to him signing the young artist to Street Mob Records in 2023. It was a moment that would propel Montana into the booming international Mexican music scene.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut on February 7, 2024, just as his music was beginning to flourish, Chuy Montana was found murdered in Tijuana. He was only 23 years old. Now, nearly a year and a half later, his voice emerges again.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Thursday (June 26) night, Street Mob Records releases Montana\u2019s posthumous debut album: No Fue Suerte<\/em>, an 11-track collection featuring collaborations with some of the most buzzworthy names in regional Mexican music today, including Fuerza Regida, as well as Calle 24, Clave Especial, Armenta and more. With the help of Street Mob, the project was completed in close collaboration with Montana\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis has been the most [unique] type of project I\u2019ve ever worked \u2014 the most challenging, but also the most rewarding,\u201d Cindy Gaxiola, VP of commercial affairs at Street Mob Records, tells Billboard Espa\u00f1ol<\/em>. \u201cWhen you\u2019re sitting there playing music for Chuy\u2019s mom, and she\u2019s taking it in and expressing her emotions \u2014 that was definitely a learning process for me, in a very positive way. So it\u2019s rewarding to know that all of those emotions, all of that work, finally gets to be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe project features never-before-heard recordings that showcase the full breadth of Chuy Montana\u2019s artistry: from corridos b\u00e9licos that confront life\u2019s raw truths (\u201cNo Fue Suerte\u201d), tender ballads steeped in emotional honesty (\u201cMam\u00e1\u201d), and pensive tracks that showcase the creativity of a young artist finding his voice (\u201cQu\u00e9 Ser\u00e1\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe album represents a community effort, largely featuring artists within the Street Mob Records roster, all of whom shared close ties with Montana. Most of the collabs were recorded over the artist\u2019s voice after his death. <\/p>\n

\n\tTwo songs feature collaborations with hitmakers Fuerza Regida. \u201cJOP was very involved in the creative process,\u201d Gaxiola says. \u201cHe wanted to know where the album stood and get everything as close as possible [to finished]. He decided to jump on \u2018Fama\u2019 with G\u00fcero X, but as we continued mixing, mastering, and finalizing, he said, \u2018You know what? I want to jump on another song.\u2019 That\u2019s how he ended up joining \u2018Sin Chingarme a Nadie.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMontana\u2019s friendship with G\u00fcero X helped to shape the album\u2019s direction and ensure Chuy\u2019s voice was centered, mentions Gaxiola. \u201cG\u00fcero was the one that also took a really good lead on this project, in terms of helping us gather the music and a bridge between us and the family since the beginning,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCalle 24 was already on one of the songs because they were friends,\u201d she explains. \u201cWhen it came to Clave Especial, who\u2019s at such an exciting point in their career, their response was immediate: \u2018Of course, what an honor for us to be a part of it.\u2019\u201d Both Calle and Clave are featured on track \u201cCuadros Peruanos.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOther collaborators, like songwriter Armenta, joined at the request of Montana\u2019s family for the steel-string guitar-laden \u201cDe Tijuana a Par\u00eds.\u201d \u201cArmenta asked if he could change some of the lyrics,\u201d Gaxiola recalls. \u201cAnd the family gave him their blessing because they wanted his voice and his touch to shine on the track. Everything about this project was very organic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the heart of the album lies Montana\u2019s ability to transport listeners into emotional, often visual worlds. His lyrics blend confessional candor with poetic imagery \u2014 a talent that stands out most on the album\u2019s eerily foreshadowing focus track, \u201cPerd\u00f3n Mam\u00e1.\u201d Featuring Juanpa Salazar and menacing accordion riffs, the song opens with the chilling lines: \u201cPerd\u00f3n, mam\u00e1, no fui lo que quisiste\/ Yo se que ahorita t\u00fa te encuentras triste\/ Mi cuerpo ah\u00ed estaba tirado, el charco rojo, empapados<\/em>\u201d (\u201cForgive me, mom, I wasn\u2019t what you wanted\/ I know that right now you\u2019re feeling sad\/ My body was lying there, the red puddle, soaked\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen you listen to the album, you can visualize everything that he\u2019s singing,\u201d Gaxiola says. \u201cThat\u2019s what makes listening to it so hard \u2014 yet it shows just how great of a storyteller he was. Even though he hadn\u2019t lived some of these stories, you could feel how much he understood them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEvery note, every word on this album carries\u00a0Chuy\u2019s spirit,\u201d shares a family member in a press release. For Montana\u2019s relatives, the album\u2019s completion offered not just a chance to celebrate his work, but also a moment of healing.<\/p>\n

\n\tStreet Mob Records also honored the family\u2019s grief by organizing a private trip in Mexico\u2019s Caribbean coast where 16 relatives gathered to hear the finished product for the first time. \u201cThey all had Chuy\u2019s merch, were wearing it that night,\u201d Gaxiola says. The trip created a space for connection and reflection. \u201cThis project wasn\u2019t just about music \u2014 it brought people together, from the artists to our team and his family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFor fans, Montana\u2019s debut album offers the bittersweet promise of what could have been \u2014 a glimpse into a rising star whose stories resonate even beyond his years. \u201cI hope fans listen to it with an open heart,\u201d Gaxiola adds. \u201cWe\u2019re all just excited for everyone to give this album the time and respect [it deserves], and for Chuy\u2019s legacy to continue to live on.\u201d<\/p>\n
