There is a little truth to this narrative, and the girl groups, surf guitar bands, and Phil Spector productions of \u201960s rock particularly influenced Blondie, whose frontwoman Debbie Harry turns 80 on July 1. In 1977, Fripp moved to New York, and eventually recorded with both Talking Heads and Blondie, joining the latter onstage on multiple occasions for a cover of the most famous Bowie song he\u2019d played on, \u201cHeroes.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"bSWy0O6yWr0\" style=\"bottom: 0; height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; width: 100%; max-width:100%;\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Blondie\u2019s third album <em>Parallel Lines<\/em> was the record that made the band a household name thanks to the surefire singles \u201cHeart of Glass\u201d and \u201cOne Way or Another.\u201d But \u201cFade Away and Radiate\u201d is the brooding masterpiece from the band\u2019s weirder sci-fi-obsessed side, with one of Harry\u2019s most theatrical vocals, and a subtle, graceful performance from powerhouse drummer Clem Burke, who passed away in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy playing on \u2018Fade Away and Radiate\u2019 was definitely informed by art rock, by King Crimson, by Roxy Music, by Robert Fripp\u2019s presence in the studio,\u201d Burke said in an interview for Kembrew McLoud\u2019s 2016 book about <em>Parallel Lines <\/em>for the 33 1\/3 series. \u201cPaul Thompson, the drummer from Roxy Music, is a big influence on me, and Roxy Music as a band was a major influence on me. Between the girl group stuff and the glam rock stuff\u2014and Spector and all that\u2014that\u2019s my drum style.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-three-more-essential-blondie-deep-cuts\"><strong>Three more essential Blondie deep cuts:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-attack-of-the-giant-ants\"><strong>\u201cThe Attack of the Giant Ants\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Blondie were the relative late bloomers of the great CBGB bands\u2014their 1976 self-titled debut doesn\u2019t contain a song as iconic as \u201cBlitzkrieg Bop\u201d or \u201cPsycho Killer.\u201d It does have some pretty fun songs, though, including \u201cThe Attack of the Giant Ants,\u201d a campy track inspired by the 1954 creature feature <em>Them!<\/em> that the band often closed their early shows with.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-slow-motion\"><strong>\u201cSlow Motion\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSlow Motion,\u201d written by Blondie keyboardist Jimmy Destri and his girlfriend, Student Teachers drummer Laura Davis, is one of the most underrated songs on 1979\u2019s <em>Eat to the Beat<\/em>. Chrysalis Records was going to release the catchy midtempo track as a single, but scrapped those plans when Blondie\u2019s song for the <em>American Gigolo<\/em> soundtrack, \u201cCall Me,\u201d unexpectedly soared to the top of the charts.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-for-your-eyes-only\"><strong>\u201cFor Your Eyes Only\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The hallowed tradition of James Bond theme songs includes a long line of great artists whose 007 themes were rejected, including Johnny Cash and Radiohead. Harry and Stein wrote a title song for 1981\u2019s <em>For Your Eyes Only<\/em>, but the film\u2019s producers preferred a different song written by Bill Conti and Michael Leeson, which was ultimately recorded by Sheena Easton.
