And her<em> <\/em>videos<em> are<\/em> film noir \u2014 teased out and teasing, with her as the only focal point, the camera entranced by her, not needing to go anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of years ago I asked her who her influences were, and she replied \u201cFemme fatales like Lauren Bacall,\u201d and Fran\u00e7oise Hardy and Nancy Sinatra\u00a0 \u2014 Dark does a great cover of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZoIq3D_WE0Y?si=RodIwjsDB3F9lbzz\" target=\"_blank\">Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)<\/a>\u201d \u2014 along with Portishead and the Arctic Monkeys.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And the riot grrrls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I discovered their movement and music in my early teens, I felt so understood. It was all so electric and daring, and definitely paved a new path for the rest of us women in music,\u201d she said, adding she also took a lot of inspiration \u201cfrom old movies, specifically film noir like <em>The Big Sleep<\/em> and classic old Hollywood films like <em>Roman Holiday<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"zyhFKX0so3I\" style=\"bottom: 0; height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; width: 100%; max-width:100%;\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>She grew up in a soup of fashionable European cities<\/strong> that included London, Barcelona and Munich and as a young teenager played in clubs around London. She moved to New York at 19 and a few years later in 2023 released the seven-song <em>Dark, Vol. 1<\/em>, not on a major label because no-one was smart enough to pick her up, but independently, with help from a company called AWAL that arranges for distribution and, very fortuitously, allows musicians to keep control of their music rights.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dark Vol.1<\/em> was part concept record, developing Alexa into a character that is, well, firstly very dark, and a bit deliciously villainous. \u201cI should be the hero in the story I\u2019ve written \/ But I\u2019m watching myself \/ Turn into the villain\u201d she sings on \u201cVillain\u201d. She also explores the notion of being her own romantic competition, as her lover falls more in love with the idea of her, a fantasy version that could never exist. That\u2019s something she might actually have to get used to in real life.<\/p>\n<p>She recently released a single and accompanying black and white video: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/T-WzDsfv0qw?si=o8A7mzbLEP00Z-Jg\" target=\"_blank\">Alibi<\/a>\u201d, a glossily produced, slow-burning song sung in her throaty, wispy voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a beautiful track, beginning with the hint of old-timey movie music, but quickly melting into a swaying beat and her intoning \u201cYou and your bad ideas \/ Whisper into my ear \/ Place a bet, take me to bed \/ I wanna disappear.\u201d At the end of the video she\u2019s slow dancing with a man we never clearly see.
