{"id":3861,"date":"2025-07-22T02:55:32","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T02:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/nick-cave-reflects-lessons-grief-anniversary-son-death-1236026651\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T02:55:32","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T02:55:32","slug":"nick-cave-reflects-lessons-grief-anniversary-son-death-1236026651","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/nick-cave-reflects-lessons-grief-anniversary-son-death-1236026651\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick Cave Reflects on Lessons of Grief on Anniversary of Son\u2019s\u00a0Passing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTen years on from the passing of his son, Arthur, Nick Cave has reflected on his loss and the lessons he has learnt from the process of grieving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCave\u2019s comments were shared on his frequently-updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theredhandfiles.com\/its-been-ten-years-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Red Hand Files<\/em><\/a> website, in which he answered questions from fans about what he and wife Susie had learned in the decade since the passing of their son, and whether their pain is one that continues eternally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe pain remains, but I have found that it evolves over time,\u201d Cave began. \u201cGrief blossoms with age, becoming less a personal affront, less a cosmic betrayal, and more a poetic quality of being as we learn to surrender to it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAs we are confronted with the intolerable injustice of death, what seems unbearable ultimately turns out not to be unbearable at all. Sorrow grows richer, deeper, and more textured. It feels more interesting, creative, and lovely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTo my great surprise, I discovered that I was part of a common human story,\u201d he continued. \u201cI began to recognise the immense value and potential of our humanness while simultaneously acknowledging, at my core, our terrifyingly perilous situation. I learned we all <em>actually<\/em> die.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI realised that although each of us is special and unique, our pain and brokenness is not. Over time, Susie and I came to understand that the world is not indifferent or cruel, but precious and loving \u2013 indeed, <em>lovely<\/em> \u2013 tilting ever toward good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCave\u2019s 15-year-old son Arthur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/nick-cave-son-dies-cliff-fall-6633574\/\">passed away<\/a> on July 14, 2015, as a result of injuries sustained from a fall from a cliff in Brighton, Sussex in England. \u201cOur son Arthur died on Tuesday evening,\u201d the Caves said in a joint statement at the time. \u201cHe was our beautiful, happy loving boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCave\u2019s experience with the grieving process was captured as part of the final sessions for Nick Cave &amp; the Bad Seeds\u2019 2016 album <em>Skeleton Tree<\/em>, while the subsequent Andrew Dominik-directed documentary <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/one-more-time-with-feeling-venice-review-nick-cave-bad-seeds-skeleton-tree-7496041\/\">One More Time with Feeling<\/a><\/em> provided an intimate insight into Cave and the band during this period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI discovered that the initial trauma of Arthur\u2019s death was the coded cypher through which God spoke, and that God had less to do with faith or belief, and more to do with <em>a way of seeing<\/em>,\u201d Cave continued in his post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI came to understand that God was a form of perception, a means of being alert to the poetic resonance of being. I found God to be woven into all things, even the greatest evils and our deepest despair. Sometimes I feel the world pulsating with a rich, lyrical energy, at other times it feels flat, void, and malevolent. I came to realise that God was present and active in both experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not sure what else I\u2019ve learned, [\u2026] except that here we still are, a decade later, living within the radiant heart of the trauma, the place where all thoughts and dreams converge and where all hope and sorrow reside, the bright and teary eye of the storm \u2013 this whirling boy who is God, like every other thing,\u201d Cave concluded. \u201cWe remember him today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCave recently used his <em>Red Hand Files<\/em> website to share insights into less heartbreaking topics, having reflected on turning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/nick-cave-denied-morrissey-collab-request-anti-woke-screed-1236000679\/\">down an offer<\/a> from Morrissey to perform an \u201canti-woke screed\u201d on a track, and sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/nick-cave-claimed-also-mistaken-nicolas-cage-1235969861\/\">fanciful tales<\/a> of being mistaken for similarly-named actor Nicolas Cage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ten years on from the passing of his son, Arthur, Nick Cave has reflected on his loss and the lessons he has learnt from the process of grieving.
