Fans rejoiced when the veteran pop-rap group announced that the five-member classic lineup would return for the first time in eight years to celebrate its 25th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSince forming in 1994 and making its major label debut in 2001, RIP SLYME led the Japanese mainstream hip-hop scene in the early aughts with its innovative beats and the mic relay among the characterful MCs, releasing a string of hits including \u201cRakuen Baby,\u201d \u201cNettaiya,\u201d \u201cFUNKASTIC,\u201d and \u201cJOINT.\u201d After taking a hiatus in 2018 and later returning as a trio, the group\u2019s classic 4 MC + 1 DJ lineup \u2014 rappers RYO-Z, ILMARI, PES, SU, and DJ FUMIYA \u2014 reunited in April this year. Back for a limited time until March 22, 2026, these members of the iconic group chatted about their eagerly anticipated comeback and current mindset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Now that you\u2019re actually back as a group of five, you must be getting all kinds of reactions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRYO-Z: Needless to say, our stance is, \u201cSorry to keep you waiting.\u201d We got reactions like, \u201cI\u2019ve been waiting for this\u201d and \u201cWelcome back\u201d on social media, and there were also people who discovered RIP SLYME for the first time. We received messages from various people including friends and acquaintances saying, \u201cAll five of you are together again at last. Congrats.\u201d We\u2019ve gradually been doing festivals and live shows and I\u2019ve been thinking, \u201cIt\u2019s starting again, this is so fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSU: People have been urging me not to cause any more trouble. Knowing there are people who are glad (that I\u2019m back) makes me want to do my best.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPES: The response has been positive, and we\u2019re glad we did this. I think all the members feel the same way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFUMIYA: Seeing the way the view counts on our music videos are going up, I think, \u201cThey\u2019ve been waiting for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tILMARI: We\u2019ve been preparing for this moment, so it feels like we\u2019ve finally been able to get properly started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cDo ON\u201d is a vibrant number suitably kicking off your comeback.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFUMIYA: We were working on it alongside \u201cWacha Wacha,\u201d but after discussing it with our team, we decided to go with \u201cDo ON\u201d as our first release. The idea was to keep it simple, similar to how we used to do things in our early days, arranged over a simple sampling base with not too many sounds added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPES: I\u2019d always wanted to write lyrics about our reunion and ourselves from an overall meta perspective, so we took an objective approach for the entirety of this song. \u201cDo ON\u201d is a word I personally use to mean \u201cbeing really into something,\u201d and it\u2019s one of the songs we wrote figuring it would fit well with this RIP SLYME project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>You also referenced a punchline from a Japanese rap hit [Yuki Chiba\u2019s \u201cTeam Tomodachi\u201d from last year] that transcends generations: \u201cTeam tomodachi, zutto tomodachi, dope na yatsu wa imada ni tomodachi\u201d (\u201cTeam friends, forever friends, dope dudes are still my friends\u201d).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tILMARI: It\u2019s a song featuring our classic mic relay that starts with PES and SU, then continues with me and RYO-Z, so I think it\u2019s a return to our roots in that sense as well.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RIP SLYME - \u3069ON\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MzUq3Bd6ZMU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>What was the idea behind \u201cWacha Wacha\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPES: My friends often say, \u201cI loved how RIP SLYME was so \u2018wacha wacha\u2019 (phrase expressing how something is bustling, lively, chaotic).\u201d The group I produce, KOMOREBI, also gets comments like, \u201cYou guys are so \u2018wacha wacha\u2019!\u201d It occurred to me that \u201cwacha wacha\u201d is a common phrase used to describe a bunch of boys, so we used that and added wordplay. The track had a lot of input from FUMIYA, so it was more time-consuming than \u201cDo ON.\u201d I\u2019m glad it ended up having a festive vibe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Your new song \u201cKekkaron\u201d has a sentimental aspect to it that also has a RIP SLYME feel to it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFUMIYA: After \u201cDo ON\u201d and \u201cWacha Wacha\u201d were finished, we felt that a mellow song would be a good addition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPES: \u201cChill Town\u201d was the one we made after being asked to write a summery number. From there, we came up with the idea to include a song that was a bit more pop and kayokyoku-like [a genre of vintage Japanese pop music]. This song also reflects our current situation in an objective way. I also thought it might be nice to have one that\u2019s like, \u201cWe\u2019re still in our prime.\u201d Since \u201cDo ON\u201d and \u201cWacha Wacha\u201d have rowdy vibes, we thought this one should have a slightly toned-down melody and lyrics. We\u2019re able to say things now that might have felt a bit embarrassing back then, you know?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>How would you say the term \u201ckekkaron\u201d (the wisdom of hindsight) reflects who you are today?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPES: Just like the way it means. We went through a lot of crap, but as they say, \u201call\u2019s well that ends well.\u201d I think other people of my generation have also managed to pull through like that, when viewed in hindsight, so I hope that message gets across to them as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Recently, HALCALI\u2019s \u201cOtsukare SUMMER\u201d from 2003 that RYO-Z and FUMIYA produced as O.T.F (Oshare Track Factory), is being listened to a lot overseas, especially in Asia. How do you feel about this resurgence?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRYO-Z: A close staff member told me, \u201cApparently HALCALI is doing great,\u201d and I thought they just mentioned it because we\u2019ve worked together before, but the news was on Yahoo! JAPAN and I was surprised, like, \u201cOh, so (the song) is going viral now.\u201d The thing is, though, that song was produced by Tanaka Tomoyuki of FPM (Fantastic Plastic Machine) [O.T.F handled the overall production of the duo], and the fact that it\u2019s his song is important, so I was really embarrassed that the article focused more on us than on him. But when I think about how this might lead to more people listening to the songs we produced as O.T.F, it\u2019s still really exciting. The fact that more people in Asia are listening to us is also interesting because there\u2019s a vibration there that transcends language.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Songs by RIP SLYME are enjoying a resurgence lately, like your song \u201cNettaiya\u201d from 2007 going viral on TikTok. And those instances of rediscovery are resulting in actual play counts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tILMARI: Back in the day, a song\u2019s success was judged by its sales one or two months after its release, but now it\u2019s different \u2014 it catches on at different times and in different places. This is about another group I\u2019m in but, TERIYAKI BOYZ\u00ae\ufe0f\u2019s \u201cTOKYO DRIFT (FAST &amp; FURIOUS)\u201d from 2006 is still being listened to and charting, which feels really surprising to me. It\u2019s completely different from when we made our debut, so it really feels like times have changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Yes, \u201cTOKYO DRIFT\u201d is still loved by many.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tILMARI: During the pandemic, artists like Awich and JP THE WAVY did freestyle versions of \u201cTOKYO DRIFT,\u201d and even (TV personality, rapper) Satomi Shigemori did a version. It\u2019s a culture that didn\u2019t exist when we debuted, so it\u2019s fascinating to see. It\u2019s not just about releasing something and moving on \u2014 it can still become a hit years later in unexpected ways. And the fact that you can\u2019t predict when it\u2019ll hit or what\u2019ll come next feels very contemporary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>HALCALI and TERIYAKI BOYZ\u00ae\ufe0f are good examples, and it\u2019s really interesting how some of the notable global resurgent hits from Japan in the past few years have come from people connected to RIP SLYME.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tILMARI: KOMOREBI\u2019s \u201cGiri Giri,\u201d that PES produced is another example.
