\n\tWith his stadium-packing shows and massive hits including \u201cBeautiful Crazy,\u201d \u201cWhen It Rains It Pours\u201d and his rendition of Tracy Chapman\u2019s \u201cFast Car,\u201d it may seem obvious that music has been Luke Combs<\/a>\u2018 passion his whole life.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut even as a sophomore at Appalachian University in Boone, North Carolina, Combs was already having to make tough choices when it came to following that passion.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a recent episode of The Dog Walk With Eddie<\/a><\/em>, Combs recalled that he had rushed at Kappa Alpha Order, but was quickly forced to make a decision between the fraternity and music, due to a scheduling conflict in which the frat\u2019s \u201cBig Brother\u201d reveal was the same night as his a cappella group\u2019s concert.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOn Big Brother reveal night we had a concert for the a cappella group, the same night that was gonna be at the same time,\u201d he said, adding that he was \u201calready kind of over\u201d the process of pledging for a fraternity.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhy does anyone really join a fraternity? To go to parties and meet chicks is kind of the deal, right?\u201d Combs said. \u201cSo I tell the guys, \u2018Hey, I really gotta do this concert tonight.\u2019 Because there\u2019s only like 12 people in the group; it\u2019s not like there\u2019s a thousand guys in the a cappella group. I\u2019m like, \u2018Your boy\u2019s got solos. I can\u2019t just not go,\u2019 [but] they were like, \u2018You\u2019re either doing this or that.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen he was forced by his potential fraternity brothers to choose, it seems his decision was quickly made.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was like, \u2018Well, I\u2019m doing that, dude. I\u2019m out,\u2019\u201d Combs said. Reflecting on it, he said, \u201cIt was tough, but I made the right choice. \u2026 I ended up here \u2026 but I would have loved to do both. \u2026 There was no wiggle room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThough he added in the interview that he held \u201cno hard feelings\u201d after having made the decision, he noted, \u201cI was just like, \u2018I kind of already sing and I\u2019m already kinda good at that. All I\u2019m doing with you guys is paying to be your friend, which I already have a lot of friends anyways.\u2019 It just didn\u2019t line up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, pursuing music has paid off for Combs. He just released his new song \u201cBack in the Saddle,\u201d and has had three top 10 hits on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 (so far). Four of his albums have reached the pinnacle of the Top Country Albums chart, while he\u2019s garnered 18 No. 1 Country Airplay hits. After spearheading his Growin\u2019 Up and Gettin\u2019 Old Tour, Combs is playing shows in 2025 including Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, and his own Bootleggers Bonfire event, slated for October.<\/p>\n
