Ads for it <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/google-super-bowl-ad-ai-plagiarizing\">are<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/vogue-magazine-ai-model-ad\">everywhere<\/a>. Your favorite artist is probably experimenting with it. And as hundreds of billions of dollars get poured into the tech, it can feel like the whole world is holding its breath for when it somehow becomes superintelligent and magically ushers us into a utopic age. The optimism is breathless and inescapable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you&#8217;re feeling anxious about AI, you&#8217;re not alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An overwhelming 71 percent of Americans are worried that AI will put vast swaths of the workforce permanently out of a job, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/americans-fear-ai-permanently-displacing-workers-reutersipsos-poll-finds-2025-08-19\/\">new <i>Reuters <\/i>poll<\/a> conducted with the firm Ipsos \u2014 a proportion that stands in stunning contrast to the absurd levels of hype being blasted out of the AI industry.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey, which polled over 4,400 adults this month, also found that 67 percent of respondents believed that AI will have consequences beyond our control. And 47 percent said outright that AI is bad for humanity, compared to less than a third who said that it wasn&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job destruction was one of the top concerns, and for good reason. It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/ceos-boasting-reducing-workforces-ai\">already happening<\/a> at a smaller scale, with some CEOs publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/ceo-replacing-workers-ai\">gloating about replacing their workers with AI agents<\/a>. And industry leaders like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have frequently <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said their systems could <a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/sam-altman-openai-wipe-out-categories-human-jobs\">wipe out entire professions<\/a> and automate parts of the economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the largest portion of respondents, 77 percent, said that they were concerned about &#8220;political chaos&#8221; caused by US rivals, such as AI being used to <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/google-ai-top-source-misinformation\">generate<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/grok-chatgpt-ai-los-angeles-protest-disinformation\/\">disinformation<\/a>, including videos depicting events that never happened. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notes how president Trump recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@7newsaustralia\/video\/7529704159000448274?embed_source=121374463%2C121468991%2C121439635%2C121749182%2C121433650%2C121404359%2C121497414%2C121477481%2C121351166%2C121811500%2C121487028%2C121679410%2C121331973%2C120811592%2C120810756%2C121819198%3Bnull%3Bembed_blank&amp;refer=embed&amp;referer_url=cdn.iframe.ly%2Fapi%2Fiframe%3Fmedia%3D1%26app%3D1%26url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.tiktok.com%252F%25407newsaustralia%252Fvideo%252F7529704159000448274%26key%3De27c740634285c9ddc20db64f73358dd&amp;referer_video_id=7529704159000448274\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared an AI-faked video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of former president Obama getting arrested in the White House in front of him.) Meanwhile, 61 percent worried about the tech&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/ai-datacenters-raising-electric-bills\">voracious electricity demands<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another recent survey, conducted by advocacy group TechEquity and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodinthemachine.com\/p\/how-california-feels-about-ai\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlighted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by tech journalist Brian Merchant in his newsletter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood in the Machine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also illustrates Americans&#8217; dampening enthusiasm for a technology propped up by hype. Specifically, it interviewed Californians \u2014 whose state, as the home <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Silicon Valley, is uniquely positioned to pass laws reining in the industry while federal regulators, under Trump&#8217;s direction, are <a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/23\/nx-s1-5213904\/trump-ai-regulations\">letting them off the leash<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the over 1,400 Californians who responded to the survey, 55 percent were more concerned than excited about AI, compared to just 33 percent who said they were excited about the tech. And 59 percent believed that AI will &#8220;most likely benefit the wealthiest households and corporations.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most striking of all, 70 percent of Californians believed there&#8217;s a need for &#8220;strong laws&#8221; regulating AI and AI companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are damning numbers in a state that, we can&#8217;t stress enough, is the locus of the American tech industry and where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comptia.org\/en-us\/resources\/research\/state-of-the-tech-workforce-2025\/\">nearly 1.5 million people<\/a> are employed by tech companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Californians are more concerned than excited about advancements in AI,&#8221; TechEquity CEO Catherine Bracy told Merchant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;Many feel it is advancing too fast, and are concerned about AI-fueled job loss, wage stagnation, privacy violations, and discrimination.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Echoing the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poll, deepfakes were the top concern (64 percent), followed by disinformation (59 percent). But wage reduction, privacy concerns, and the loss of jobs were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also flagged as concerns by the majority of Californians who said they were worried about AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our polling finds Californians echoing what we are seeing in poll after poll from across the country: voters are telling their representatives not to trust tech companies to self-govern,&#8221; Bracy told Merchant. &#8220;And this is not because they are anti-technology.
