{"id":475,"date":"2025-05-08T18:30:34","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T18:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/college-students-ai-typos\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T18:30:34","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T18:30:34","slug":"college-students-ai-typos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/college-students-ai-typos\/","title":{"rendered":"College Students Are Sprinkling Typos Into Their AI Papers on Purpose"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div><img width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress-assets.futurism.com\/2025\/05\/college-students-ai-typos.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-post-image\" alt=\"To bypass AI writing detection, college students are, apparently, adding typos into their chatbot-generated papers.\u00a0\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"><\/div>\n<p>To bypass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/i-tested-10-ai-content-detectors-and-these-5-correctly-identified-ai-text-every-time\/\">artificial intelligence writing detection<\/a>, college students are reportedly adding typos into their chatbot-generated papers.<\/p>\n<p>In a wide-ranging exploration into the ways AI has rapidly changed academia, students <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/openai-chatgpt-ai-cheating-education-college-students-school.html\">told <em>New York Magazine<\/em><\/a> that AI cheating has become so normalized, they&#8217;re figuring out creative ways to get away with it.<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s common for students \u2014 and for anyone else who uses ChatGPT and other chatbots \u2014 to edit the output of an AI chatbot, some are adding typos manually to make essays sound more human.<\/p>\n<p>Some more ingenious users are advising chatbots to essentially dumb down their writing. In a TikTok viewed by <em>NYMag<\/em>, for instance, a student said she likes to prompt chatbots to &#8220;write [an essay] as a college freshman who is a li\u2019l dumb&#8221; to bypass AI detection.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford sophomore Eric told <em>NYMag<\/em> that his classmates have gotten &#8220;really good at manipulating the systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You put a prompt in ChatGPT, then put the output into another AI system, then put it into another AI system,&#8221; he said. &#8220;At that point, if you put it into an AI-detection system, it decreases the percentage of AI used every time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The irony, of course, is that students who go to such lengths to make their AI-generated papers sound human could be using that creativity to actually write the dang things.<\/p>\n<p>Still, instructors are concerned by the energy students are expending on cheating with chatbots.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re using AI because it\u2019s a simple solution and it\u2019s an easy way for them not to put in time writing essays,&#8221; University of Iowa teaching assistant Sam Williams\u00a0told the magazine. &#8220;And I get it, because I hated writing essays when I was in school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When assisting a general education class on music and social change last fall, Williams said he was shocked by the change in tone and quality between students&#8217; first assignments \u2014 a personal essay about their own tastes \u2014 and their second, which dug into the history of New Orleans jazz.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did those essays sound different, but many included egregious factual errors like the inclusion of Elvis Presley, who was neither a part of the Nola scene nor a jazz musician.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I literally told my class, &#8216;Hey, don\u2019t use AI,'&#8221; the teaching assistant recalled. &#8220;&#8216;But if you\u2019re going to cheat, you have to cheat in a way that\u2019s intelligent.
