The much-maligned tech experiment, which has been deployed at 500 Taco Bell locations across the United States, isn&#8217;t quite dead yet. But it&#8217;s received enough backlash since being unleashed on hangry motorists that even one of the company&#8217;s top executives is having second thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re learning a lot, I&#8217;m going to be honest with you,&#8221; Taco Bell chief digital and technology officer Dane Mathews <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/taco-bell-rethinks-future-of-voice-ai-at-the-drive-through-72990b5a?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAhsc58s-ZbX2kKx5m4plRXuxkZ7Vmtd3nZqYI-LXJQ8kg_sHasezxKFORomCGE%3D&amp;gaa_ts=68b14294&amp;gaa_sig=XYE8HeEk-hPB6D25RhuGRGlBw1KmE22nrCXWw50yyk1ORZ2V5uI_t3MDMjN9zBnZ7qaJ6UZpgLbb3S18LW3oCQ%3D%3D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conceded to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in what <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sounded like an awfully weary tone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think like everybody, sometimes it lets me down,&#8221; he admitted, &#8220;but sometimes it really surprises me.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The response on social media suggests that most customers probably don&#8217;t want their drive-thru to &#8220;surprise&#8221; them. At best, there<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s short-lived amusement in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1176180896994371\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">messing with the AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with outrageous requests, like &#8220;18,000 cups of water.&#8221; At worst, customers just get annoyed or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@foodies\/video\/7484780996848618782\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weirded out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yelling into an awful microphone while responding to a voice blaring through a busted speaker is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a reality many of us slobs looking for a quick bite on a late night have grown familiar with \u2014 but it wasn&#8217;t necessarily an experience that needed innovation from Silicon Valley&#8217;s latest shiny toy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mathews conceded that it may not make sense to use AI at every drive-thru, per the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WSJ<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He further determined that super-busy restaurants with long lines might be better off with a human handling things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s undoubtedly true, but it raises the question: what&#8217;s the point of using it, then? We&#8217;re told that AI isn&#8217;t here to take our jobs but to alleviate our burdens; evidently it can&#8217;t even do that. The AI&#8217;s brain melts like a three cheese blend when asked to perform a supposedly low-skilled job done perfectly well by bored teenagers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other chains have deployed with AI-powered drive-thrus with similar struggles. McDonald&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/mcdonalds-abandoning-ai-drive-thrus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abandoned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its first experiment after the AI provided by its business partner IBM kept <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@typical_redhead_\/video\/7192248491853303086?amp%3Bt=1676307505881&amp;q=robot%20mcdonalds%20fail\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screwing up orders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It&#8217;s giving AI drive-thrus a second go, however, in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mcdonalds-gives-its-restaurants-an-ai-makeover-2134f01e?mod=article_inline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new collaboration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Google.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wendy&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/food\/2025\/02\/18\/ai-drive-thru-wendys\/79097179007\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year that it&#8217;d be expanding its AI-powered drive-thrus to 500 more locations, even though it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/wendys-ai-drive-thru-orders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously admitted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its system required human intervention a B<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aconated<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/72x72\/2122.png\" alt=\"\u2122\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\"> 14 percent of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not a Crunchwrap<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/72x72\/2122.png\" alt=\"\u2122\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\"> for Taco Bell&#8217;s AI efforts, either, and the tech apparently remains a critical part of its future, according to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WSJ<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I can tell you it&#8217;s a very active conversation inside Taco Bell in partnership with our franchisees,&#8221; Mathews told the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WSJ<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;I think at the end of the day, it&#8217;s really, really early. And we feel that.
