{"id":5239,"date":"2025-09-17T02:47:01","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T02:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/bonnie-raitt-keeps-politics-out-of-her-shows-1236068142\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T02:47:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T02:47:01","slug":"bonnie-raitt-keeps-politics-out-of-her-shows-1236068142","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/bonnie-raitt-keeps-politics-out-of-her-shows-1236068142\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We\u2019re All Suffering\u2019: Why Bonnie Raitt Keeps Politics Out of Her\u00a0Shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/bonnie-raitt\/\">Bonnie Raitt<\/a>\u2018s political and social leanings are no secret, and she\u2019s certainly rankled by what\u2019s transpired during the first nearly nine months of the current administration in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut as the 15-time Grammy Award winner and 2024 Kennedy Center Honoree continues touring to support her 2022 album<em> Just Like That\u2026<\/em>, Raitt says she\u2019s doing her best to make her concerts something of an antithesis to the turmoil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI never proselytize on stage about my positions, politically, but I do acknowledge the suffering and cruelty and anxiety that we\u2019re feeling,\u201d says Raitt, who routinely contributes lobby space at her concerts to non-profits involved in social and environmental causes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t assume that everybody in the audience is politically aligned with me, but I think we all agree there\u2019s a lot more discord and dissension and unhappiness and stress, to put it mildly.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRaitt spoke with <em>Billboard <\/em>ahead of a recent Detroit concert, where she had a warm reunion with <em>Nick of Time<\/em> producer Don Was, in town rehearsing with his Pan-Detroit Ensemble, on his 73rd birthday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re all suffering, I think,\u201d she continues. \u201cBut aside from announcing which grassroots groups have a table in the front lobby \u2014 it\u2019s clear I like to support the environmental and voter registration and humanitarian kind of efforts \u2014 I keep it pretty general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAnd it\u2019s a great uplift for the audience, and for me, in tricky and very stressful, anxious and upsetting times to have this time to come together and celebrate our great history in these songs, and these songwriters and our affection for each other. She generally precedes Oliver Mtukudzi\u2019s spiritual \u201cHear Me Lord,\u201d which she recorded for 2002\u2019s <em>Silver Lining<\/em> by \u201csaying I know we\u2019re all feeling a lot of anxiety,. and some of us are more depressed than others, but let\u2019s just sort of all on\u2026we need all the help we can get.\u2019 And that\u2019s just very uplifting.\u201d Raitt does acknowledge, however, that it\u2019s probably a good thing she received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/awards\/kennedy-center-honors-grateful-dead-bonnie-raitt-apollo-1235848089\/\">Kennedy Center Honor <\/a>when she did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe chances of me and the Grateful Dead getting honored with this current situation would\u2019ve been impossible,\u201d she acknowledged, \u201cso I\u2019m really glad\u2026Not only was it a wonderful event, but it was really timely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRaitt is currently winding down her latest North American tour, which wraps Sept. 24 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. On tap after that, she said, \u201cI don\u2019t have plans for anything other than a serious break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis is our fourth year of touring; we\u2019ve been pretty steady on the road since the record came out,\u201d she says. And breaks have been used to appear at benefit concerts and appearing at awards shows \u2014 with three Grammys for <em>Just Like That<\/em>\u2026, including song of the year, and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/video\/bonnie-raitt-accepts-icon-award-women-in-music-2022\/#\">Icon Award<\/a> at the 2022 Billboard Women In Music Awards. She\u2019s also filmed appearances for a number of documentaries about \u201cat least nine people I really love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m glad I got to know them, and to be able to talk about them from having known them for 40 or 50 years, and what their music means to me,\u201d Raitt says. \u201cI\u2019m happy to be an elder that\u2019s been around and do that, but it really cuts into the time thinking about my own new music. I don\u2019t know how people write whole new albums while they\u2019re out there. I can\u2019t\u2026so I\u2019m trying to leave time free so that my own project and my own downtime can be fit in.
