{"id":5597,"date":"2025-09-30T18:14:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T18:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/computer-science-college-graduates-jobs\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T18:14:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T18:14:16","slug":"computer-science-college-graduates-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/computer-science-college-graduates-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Compsci Grads Are Cooked"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">If you are majoring in computer science or computer engineering right now, good luck on finding a good job when you get your diploma \u2014 even if you graduate from a top program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">That\u2019s the sobering takeaway from Hany Farid, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/news\/watch-uc-berkeley-digital-forensics-expert-break-down-political-deepfakes\" rel=\"nofollow\">deepfake expert<\/a> at the University of California, Berkeley, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nG2_GhNdTek&amp;t=1s\" rel=\"nofollow\">appeared<\/a> on NOVA\u2019s \u201cParticles of Thought\u201d podcast to talk the current state of AI, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/2025\/05\/14\/tech-industry-layoffs\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">tech job situation<\/a> that\u2019s been shredded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/finance\/tech-layoffs\" rel=\"nofollow\">multiple lay offs<\/a>, and how should tech graduates navigate this rocky new landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cOur students typically had five internship offers throughout their first four years of college,\u201d Farid said about Berkeley computer science students. \u201cThey would graduate with exceedingly high salaries, multiple offers. They had the run of the place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThat is not happening today,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re happy to get one job offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Farid\u2019s observation is borne out by job statistics for recent college graduates, who now have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/economy\/job-market-report-college-student-graduates-ai-trump-tariffs-rcna221693\" rel=\"nofollow\">unemployment rate of 5.3 percent<\/a> compared to around 4 percent for everybody else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/research\/college-labor-market#--:explore:outcomes-by-major\" rel=\"nofollow\">numbers are even worse<\/a> for young people with degrees in computer science, who have an unemployment rate of 6.1 percent \u2014 and also for computer engineering grads, 7.5 percent; by comparison, their peers who majored in art history currently have an unemployment rate of around 3 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cSomething is happening in the industry,\u201d Farid said, pointing to the growing ubiquity of AI and \u201cthinning of the ranks\u201d in tech companies as possible reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The major factors that are driving the high unemployment rate among techies is that many companies have embraced <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/ai-transforming-software-engineers-jobs-174755497.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">vibe coding<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/perplexity-ceo-ai-coding-tools-transformed-the-way-we-work\/494663\" rel=\"nofollow\">other AI tools<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/joe-procopio\/the-entry-level-tech-job-is-officially-dead\/91243123\" rel=\"nofollow\">decimating entry level staff positions<\/a>, along with crawling back from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/whatis\/feature\/Tech-sector-layoffs-explained-What-you-need-to-know\" rel=\"nofollow\">over hiring during the COVID pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Young people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/10\/technology\/coding-ai-jobs-students.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">interviewed by <em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>back in August said they feel like they\u2019ve been rug pulled by an industry that promised six figure salaries, large signing bonuses and top tier benefits.
