OpenAI has officially unveiled its latest text-to-video and audio AI generator<\/a>, Sora 2.<\/p>\n

So far, we\u2019re not quite convinced by the company\u2019s marketing efforts. In an unsettling promotional clip<\/a>, an algorithmically synthesized version of OpenAI\u2019s CEO, Sam Altman, announces the company\u2019s answer to Meta\u2019s Vibes app<\/a> \u2014 a TikTok-like experience<\/a> designed to expose users to an endless deluge of AI slop.<\/p>\n

The issue? The AI-generated Altman suffers from chronic issues plaguing AI-generated footage: it looks unconvincing and unreal.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne year, we redefined what is possible with moving images,\u201d the fake Altman says in a clearly robotic and AI-generated voice, referring to the company\u2019s preceding Sora video generator, which was released in December 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we\u2019re announcing the Sora app,\u201d he added, while a pair of piercing blue eyes stared unblinkingly into the camera.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a disconcerting appearance, falling just short of clearing the uncanny valley.<\/p>\n

The rest of the promotional video is a mind-numbing parade of AI-generated clips, from jockeys riding unicorns to a stadium-lit Altman attending what appears to be a sporting event involving humans riding oversized ducks.<\/p>\n

Users on social media were taken aback by the slop fest \u2014 and didn\u2019t hold back in their feedback.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis feels uncomfortably soulless to watch,\u201d one X-formerly-Twitter user chimed in<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s somehow like watching a dead person dance, very unsettling. Like the beginning of a nightmare, where you haven\u2019t seen the monster yet, but you already know something is very wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the fresh f**king <\/strong>hell is this turd-pile?\u201d cinematographer James Rogers added<\/a>. \u201cI hate everything about this. Unsettling, empty, soulless filth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPrompting isn\u2019t creativity,\u201d one user tweeted<\/a>. \u201cIt never will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

OpenAI is betting huge on its video generator, claiming that Sora 2\u2019s \u201cadvanced world simulation capabilities\u201d will be \u201ccritical for training AI models that deeply understand the physical world.\u201d<\/p>\n

In one demonstration, the company showed that Sora 2 effortlessly rendered a video of a gymnast flipping on a balance beam<\/a> \u2014 a subject that led its preceding model to hilariously fail the \u201cTuring test for AI video<\/a>\u201d by turning the athlete into a grotesque, flailing ball of far too many limbs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s certainly an <\/strong>improvement over last year\u2019s AI video generator, countless users are already balking at OpenAI\u2019s efforts to force-feed even more AI-generated slop to the masses by packaging it into a smartphone app.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will produce levels of slop one could only imagine before,\u201d one X user joked<\/a>.<\/p>\n

OpenAI\u2019s originality also leaves something to be desired. The news comes roughly a week after Meta unveiled Vibes, an extremely similar TikTok-like video feed of AI slop. Netizens weren\u2019t impressed<\/a> with that effort either, calling it \u201chot garbage<\/a>\u201d and an \u201cinfinite slop machine<\/a>,\u201d while questioning<\/a> who could possibly want to swipe through fake videos of snowboarders<\/a> jumping over rubber ducks or a cat-headed news anchor.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood news y\u2019all, Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s new idea that we\u2019re forcing on everybody is finally here,\u201d The Daily Show<\/em>\u2018s Michael Kosta said in a scathing satire<\/a> of Vibes.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur AI video tools are set to completely revolutionize how dumb f**king losers create sh**ty little videos,\u201d Kosta added. \u201cAnd we\u2019re so stoked about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In short, both OpenAI and Meta will certainly have their work cut out to convince users that an app entirely dedicated to AI slop will meaningfully justify the tens of billions of dollars they\u2019re pouring into the tech.<\/p>\n

\u201cEat your slop, piggies,\u201d Kosta said mockingly. \u201cEat it from the palm of our hands.\u201d<\/p>\n
