{"id":5631,"date":"2025-10-01T16:25:49","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T16:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/openai-sora-2-videos-people-shoplifting\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T16:25:49","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T16:25:49","slug":"openai-sora-2-videos-people-shoplifting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/openai-sora-2-videos-people-shoplifting\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI\u2019s Sora 2 Generates Realistic Videos of People Shoplifting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">OpenAI has <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-launching-tiktok-competitor-ai-slop-videos\">released a new smartphone app<\/a> \u2014 currently <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/sora-2-invite-code-how-to-try-ai-video-app\" rel=\"nofollow\">invite-only <\/a><strong>\u2014 <\/strong>designed to rival TikTok with an infinite barrage of AI slop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The app accompanies the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/sora-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest text-to-video and audio AI generator<\/a>, Sora 2, which it claims is \u201cmore physically accurate, realistic, and more controllable than prior systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">A two-minute clip celebrating the announcement was met with <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-ai-video-sam-altman\">predominantly negative reactions<\/a>, with netizens dismissing it as \u201cunsettling\u201d and \u201csoulless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Worse yet, facilitating the AI generation of photorealistic videos could have some concerning implications, especially when it comes to impersonation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Ironically, OpenAI\u2019s own Sora developer, Gabriel Petersson, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GabrielPeterss4\/status\/1973120058907041902\" rel=\"nofollow\">demonstrated<\/a> how easy it was to generate CCTV footage of anyone \u2014 in this case, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman \u2014 \u201cstealing [graphics cards] at Target.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"lazy-twitter-tweet\" data-tweet-id=\"1973120058907041902\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\" lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">i have the most liked video on sora 2 right now, i will be enjoying this short moment while it lasts<\/p>\n<p>cctv footage of sam stealing gpus at target for sora inference <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/B86qzUGlMq\">pic.twitter.com\/B86qzUGlMq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 gabriel (@GabrielPeterss4) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GabrielPeterss4\/status\/1973120058907041902?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 30, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The clip shows Altman getting caught by a nearby security guard after trying to walk out of a store with a GPU box \u2014 a gag meant to poke fun at the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/sam-altman-openai-run-out-of-gpus\">frantic multibillion-dollar bids to secure AI hardware<\/a>. Specialized AI hardware has become an extremely hot commodity, with AI chipmaker Nvidia <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/jim-cramer-ai-bubble\">announcing a $100 billion partnership<\/a> with OpenAI just last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">But the light ribbing of a tech executive aside, the video paints a dystopian picture of a future where anybody could easily be framed for a crime they didn\u2019t commit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">People were quick to point out that Petersson\u2019s gaffe \u2014 which was followed by several other videos of Altman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GabrielPeterss4\/status\/1973156013047156919\" rel=\"nofollow\">sleeping in an office chair<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GabrielPeterss4\/status\/1973096194508251321\" rel=\"nofollow\">making people dance on a train platform<\/a> \u2014 felt tone-deaf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cOpenAI employees are very excited about how well their new AI tool can create fake videos of people doing crimes and have definitely thought through all the implications of this,\u201d <em>Washington Post<\/em> reporter Drew Harwell <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/drewharwell.com\/post\/3m23ob342h22a\" rel=\"nofollow\">posted on Bluesky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cEvery defense attorney now has a pre-written motion when it comes to video evidence, I see,\u201d another user <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/bobertonbluesky.bsky.social\/post\/3m23oe34rls24\" rel=\"nofollow\">commented<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">We\u2019ve already seen instances of law enforcement using AI-powered facial recognition to identify perpetrators, despite glaring inaccuracies in the tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/interactive\/2025\/police-artificial-intelligence-facial-recognition\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>WaPo<\/em> reported earlier this year<\/a>, officers in St. Louis used the tech to build a case against an innocent 29-year-old father of four after he was identified by an AI app, despite being warned that it \u201cshould not be used as the sole basis for any decision.\u201d<strong> <\/strong>While the case was eventually dismissed, experts warn that it could set a worrying precedent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The use of AI apps to generate transcripts of body cam videos has also raised concerns that the tech could <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/ai-used-by-police-cannot-tell-black-people-apart-and-other-reasons-canadas-ai-laws-need-urgent-attention-236752\" rel=\"nofollow\">exacerbate existing problems in law enforcement<\/a>, including racism and sexism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Now, with the advent of powerful text-to-video AI generators, like Sora 2, it\u2019s becoming even easier to place a target at a crime scene they never visited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">For its part, OpenAI claims that its new app\u2019s \u201ccameo\u201d feature \u2014 which allows you to \u201cdrop yourself straight into any Sora scene\u201d \u2014 will protect regular people from having their appearance show up in AI-generated videos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cWith cameos, you are in control of your likeness end-to-end with Sora,\u201d the company\u2019s announcement reads. \u201cOnly you decide who can use your cameo, and you can revoke access or remove any video that includes it at any time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cVideos containing cameos of you, including drafts created by other people, are viewable by you at any time,\u201d OpenAI promised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The company <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/launching-sora-responsibly\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">also said<\/a> that it\u2019s taking \u201cmeasures to block depictions of public figures\u201d (whether Altman consented to Petersson\u2019s videos remains unclear) and that \u201cevery video, profile, and comment can be reported for abuse, with clear recourse when policies are violated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">It\u2019s too early to tell how all of this will play out. But the sheer fact that the company\u2019s own employees are already demonstrating how easy it is to generate fake videos of innocent people committing crimes doesn\u2019t bode well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">OpenAI has already <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/openai-chatgpt-mental-distress\">struggled greatly to implement effective guardrails<\/a> when it comes to its large language models.
