Shortly after the announcement of an \u201cAI actor\u201d dubbed Tilly Norwood drew overwhelming criticism<\/a>, Italian movie producer Andrea Iervolino has announced plans to take the trend to its logical conclusion.<\/p>\n

As Deadline<\/em> reports<\/a>, Iervolino unveiled what he claims will be the first film directed entirely by an AI entity, titled \u201cThe Sweet Idleness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iervolino is no joke; his credits include \u201cFerrari,\u201d a 2023 action movie starring Adam Driver, and the 2017 drama \u201cTo the Bone,\u201d starring Lily Collins and Keanu Reeves.<\/p>\n

The unusual flick will be directed by an AI dubbed \u201cFellinAI,\u201d which will be supervised and guided by Iervolino, who frames himself as the \u201chuman-in-the-loop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps unsurprisingly, \u201cThe Sweet Idleness\u201d is about a future in which humanity enjoys the kind of \u201cera of abundance\u201d AI companies<\/a> and investors<\/a> have been promising for years. Those who still work in this fictional world do it as part of a symbolic ritual, per Deadline<\/em>, while the rest are free to do as they please.<\/p>\n

A trailer<\/a> for the movie \u2014 a still shot is pictured above \u2014 appears to be entirely AI-generated, suggesting the project is predominantly a product of the tech itself and may not feature human actors, either.<\/p>\n

The AI industry has sent clear signals that it\u2019s looking to take over Hollywood. Earlier this month, OpenAI announced it had teamed up with production companies in London and Los Angeles to create a feature-length animated movie made largely with AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Iervolino\u2019s announcement comes at a time when skepticism and outright hatred of AI-generated content<\/a> have reached a fever pitch, with tech companies encountering major backlash after announcing a slew of new social media apps<\/a> designed to share AI slop.<\/p>\n

Users on social media immediately disparaged Iervolino\u2019s project, calling it \u201cgarbage<\/a>\u201d and \u201cf**king stupid<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The announcement<\/a> of the \u201cAI actor\u201d Tilly Norwood created a particularly massive stir, with major Hollywood stars denouncing the project.<\/p>\n

A-lister actress Emily Blunt called the project \u201cterrifying,\u201d telling Variety<\/em><\/a> that agencies should \u201cstop taking away our human connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are suddenly up against something that\u2019s been generated with 5,000 other actors\u2026 so it\u2019s a little bit of an unfair advantage,\u201d Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg said on \u201cThe View\u201d earlier this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Norwood \u201cis not an actor, it\u2019s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers,\u201d the Screen Actors Guild said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In short, Iervolino will likely have plenty of criticism to contend with if he goes through with the project.<\/p>\n

In a statement, he argued that \u201cThe Sweet Idleness\u201d will represent a \u201cnew chapter in the history of cinema,\u201d according to Deadline<\/em> \u2014 but added that it wasn\u2019t designed to \u201creplace traditional cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n

How that line of reasoning will sit with human directors remains to be seen. <\/p>\n
