The video, which reportedly went viral on Chinese TikTok before being re-uploaded by China Daily<\/em><\/a>, shows the girl sobbing after her father broke the bad news \u2014 the toy is broken, likely for good. \u201cDad said you won\u2019t turn on again,\u201d she tells the device, its inner wires spilling out of a busted plastic shell. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I can still talk,\u201d the AI bot responds, \u201clet me teach you one last word in English, shall I? \u2018Memory\u2019 means remembrance. I\u2019ll always remember the happy times with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ll miss you so much,\u201d the child <\/strong>bawls. The device\u2019s response is admittedly pretty touching: \u201cI\u2019ll miss you too, but remember, no matter where I am, I\u2019ll always be cheering for you. Keep being that curious, learning little genius, making dad and aunt proud, will you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGrow up happily and listen to dad and grandma,\u201d it finishes.<\/p>\n

The tear jerker of a video is remarkably fitting for 2025 \u2014 instead of learning about loss from a friend moving away or the death of a family pet, this kid seems to be getting the grim lesson from an artificially generated voice module.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it\u2019s a really heartwarming video, the fact that an AI can handle things so smoothly and affectionately is a bit scary,\u201d one Chinese netizen commented<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The gadget appears to be a XiaoZhi AI Voice Chat Robot Ball, a multi-purpose home network device<\/a> powered by DeepSeek\u2019s language models. Some will recognize DeepSeek as the Chinese AI company that startled the world<\/a> earlier this year with the release of its V3 model, a powerful system built for a fraction of the cost<\/a> of comparable western systems.<\/p>\n

AI devices for children are becoming increasingly popular around the world. Ethically, it\u2019s about as straightforward as a minefield \u2014 in New York City, for example, powerful tech companies are pouring money into teachers unions<\/a> to fill classrooms with their AI. Some applications are decidedly less sinister, like Robin the emotional support robot<\/a>, which offers an amorphous companion to children suffering from diseases like Leukemia.<\/p>\n

These are uncharted waters. Whichever way you slice it, it\u2019s clear we\u2019re hurtling toward an unprecedented era of artificial companionship.<\/p>\n
