It evolved from more than three years\u2019 worth of sessions, mainly at New York\u2019s Electric Lady Studios, and featured an impressive roster of soul, funk, and jazz players such as Roots drummer Ahmir \u201cQuestlove\u201d Thompson, who became D\u2019Angelo\u2019s musical copilot, keyboardist James Poyser, guitarist Charlie Hunter and trumpeter Roy Hargrove.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was cool about it,\u201d Thompson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/2008\/08\/dangelo-what-hell-happened\/\">told SPIN<\/a> in 2008, \u201cwas D had the A room [of the studio] on lockdown, and Common had the B room. Then Common brought [producer] Jay Dee inside, and next thing you know, both camps are working in each other\u2019s studio.\u201d Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli and Mos Def visited frequently, creating a ground zero for what Thompson called \u201ca left-of-center\u201d black music renaissance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Roots Picnic set was to have been only D\u2019Angelo\u2019s second full concert since 2016. \u201cDue to an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery I had earlier this year, I\u2019ve been advised by my team of specialist[s] that the performance this weekend could further complicate matters,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DKA6bznx3cz\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote on Instagram<\/a> at the time. \u201cIt is nearly impossible to express how disappointed I am not to be able to play with my brothers the Roots. And even more disappointed not to see all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so thankful to my beautiful fans for continuing to rock with me and I thank you for your continued support,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m currently in the lab and I can\u2019t wait to serve up what\u2019s in the pot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson was instrumental in coaxing D\u2019Angelo to release the 2014 album\u00a0<em>Black Messiah<\/em>\u00a0after a nearly 15-year hiatus. The path to that project, and the aftermath of the success of <em>Voodoo<\/em>, were chronicled in the 2019 documentary\u00a0<em>Devil\u2019s Pie: D\u2019Angelo,\u00a0<\/em>directed by Dutch filmmaker Carine Bijlsma. It also addressed the artist\u2019s struggles with substance abuse, the loss of family members, fame and his recovery from a major car accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Black Messiah<\/em>\u00a0is both ancient and fresh \u2014 a surging mass of old blues and new soul built from classic thought and rebel spirit, unending angst and beautiful struggle, sunshine and moonlight and cynicism and sex and fighting and loving and losing and praying and cussing and hating and hoping,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/2014\/12\/dangelo-black-messiah\/\">SPIN wrote<\/a> in its contemporary review of the album.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Angelo\u2019s only on-stage appearances since concluding promo work behind\u00a0<em>Black Messiah<\/em> were at a 2021 Verzuz show at New York\u2019s Apollo Theater and at that year\u2019s Tribeca Film Festival, plus an April 2022 cameo with Questlove and Raphael Saadiq while covering Sly &amp; the Family Stone\u2019s \u201cBabies Makin\u2019 Babies\u201d during the Netflix Is a Joke festival at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Saadiq previously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p6HHx3PyHfI&amp;list=PLutjSNT2sWl2zXDACq-5IfuGJ1TKZFjE7&amp;index=17&amp;pp=iAQB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that D\u2019Angelo was actively working on new music, but nothing has come to light beyond \u201cI Want You Forever,\u201d his Jay-Z-assisted contribution to last year\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Book of Clarence<\/em>\u00a0soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Angelo is survived by three children.
