You might\u2019ve heard about human-AI relationships<\/a>, but what would you do if AI was trying to sabotage your dating life with fellow humans? That\u2019s a question more and more romantic hopefuls are grappling with thanks to the troubling rise of AI-powered wingmen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a phenomenon tied to the prevalence of text-based apps in dating. Recent surveys show that one in five <\/strong>adults<\/a> under 30 met their partner on a dating app like Tinder or Hinge, and more than half are using dating apps. For years, app-based dating has been regarded as a profoundly alienating experience<\/a>, a paradigm shift which coincides with a rapid rise in social isolation and loneliness<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The rise of large language models (LLMs) \u2014 AI chatbots built to keep users engaged in question-and-answer loops \u2014 has only made this situation worse, as relationship seekers outsource their flirting to an algorithm.<\/p>\n

Fresh reporting by <\/a>The Guardian<\/a> <\/em>detailed some cases where AI wingmen went so far off the rails, one has to wonder what the end-game even was.<\/p>\n

One story involved a 32 year old man named Rich, who used ChatGPT after exchanging social media information with someone he met on a Friday night at the bar. Following the chatbot\u2019s advice, Rich ghosted his new acquaintance for two days, refusing to message her until Monday morning to \u201cset the right pace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though he appeared to be blowing her off, he was really spending his weekend meticulously crafting the perfect opening message with ChatGPT. \u201cKeep it light, warm, and low-stakes so it reads as genuine interest without urgency,\u201d the bot advised, according to The Guardian<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the end, he went with a staggeringly bland \u201cHey Sarah, it was lovely to meet you\u201d \u2014 a message he evidently would\u2019ve struggled to come up with on his own. Sadly, she ghosted him in return. \u201cIt\u2019s been two weeks now,\u201d he lamented to the paper.<\/p>\n

In other cases, ChatGPT\u2019s cloying advice makes for a pretty obvious red flag. Nina, a 35 year old woman who\u2019s been single for three years, told The Guardian <\/em>she recently got the opening line, \u201cyour smile is effortlessly captivating\u201d on a dating app. \u201cNo one talks like that\u201d she said, adding that she hasn\u2019t replied.<\/p>\n

For those on the receiving end of AI-generated rizz, the phenomenon \u2014 commonly called \u201cchatfishing\u201d \u2014 can result in some pretty disappointing dates.<\/p>\n

For the 36 year old Rachel, the realization came after spending three weeks getting to know a potential match on Hinge. The man seemed thoughtful, she told The Guardian<\/em>; \u201cIt was like he was genuinely trying to get to know me on a deeper level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

After meeting at the bar, however, it became obvious that he wasn\u2019t actually the sensitive, confident man he presented himself as \u2014 ChatGPT had helped him secure the date, but when he was forced to meet face-to-face, he couldn\u2019t summon up any appeal himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I was sitting opposite someone I\u2019d never even spoken to,\u201d she said. \u201cI tried to have the same sort of conversation as we\u2019d been having online, but it was like, \u2018Knock, knock, is anyone home?\u2019 \u2013 like he knew basically nothing about me.\u201d<\/p>\n
