Inveterate overpromiser Elon Musk is teasing that his chatbot Grok could soon \u201cachieve artificial general intelligence,\u201d or AGI \u2014 a hypothetical form of AI system that surpasses humans in virtually every way, and remains the white whale of the AI industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy estimate of the probability of Grok 5 achieving AGI is now at 10 percent and rising,\u201d Musk wrote<\/a> on his website X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Like a good courtier, an employee at Musk\u2019s AI firm xAI was there to boost Musk\u2019s claim within the hour.<\/p>\n

\u201cI trust this forecast of probability,\u201d tweeted<\/a> the employee Aditya Gupta. (This is the same worker who a few months ago was publicly chewed out by his boss<\/a> for using the word \u201cresearcher\u201d instead of \u201cengineer.\u201d At the time, Gupta issued a sheepish correction.)<\/p>\n

And thus began a sycophant game of telephone. Musk, in response to someone praising his own prediction, interpreted that as a sign to double down on it \u2014 while at the same time hedging his bets, somehow.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrok 5 will be AGI or something indistinguishable from AGI,\u201d an emboldened Musk proclaimed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Musk made a similar bet<\/a> in 2024, predicting AGI would come \u201cwithin two years.\u201d He also teased<\/a> last month that Grok 5 \u201chas a chance\u201d of reaching AGI. But is it a ten percent chance? Or is it something that \u201cwill,\u201d as in absolutely<\/em>, happen, per his latest tweet?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Raising pedantic quibbles like these will make Musk very mad at you, apparently. Because that\u2019s what exactly OpenAI research scientist Gabriel Petersson <\/strong>did.<\/p>\n

\u201c10 percent chance Elon declares he reached AGI a fourth time,\u201d Petersson, who works on the company\u2019s video generating AI Sora, joked<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s no longer first to AGI, it\u2019s first to 10 AGIs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk fumed in the replies, reaching back to his strange bugbear about \u201cresearchers\u201d versus \u201cengineers\u201d that had previously caused him to rage at Gupta. \u201cYou call yourself a \u2018researcher,’\u201d he wrote. \u201cPathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk is in a bitter rivalry with OpenAI, a company he helped cofound in 2015 with its current CEO Sam Altman. Musk departed the firm, which is now being valued at half a trillion dollars, in late 2018 reportedly because of clashing with Altman\u2019s direction. The two have been feuding ever since, with Musk firing off several lawsuits<\/a> against his former company.<\/p>\n

They also have different definitions of AGI: Musk considers it an AI that\u2019s either \u201csmarter than the smartest human\u201d he said<\/a> in 2024, or \u201ccapable of doing anything a human with a computer can do,\u201d he said in a recent tweet<\/a> (good luck pinning him down on anything.) OpenAI officially defines<\/a> it as a \u201chighly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work,\u201d but Altman is also on the record saying<\/a> that AGI is \u201cnot a super useful term,\u201d despite continuing to use it.<\/p>\n

All that said, it\u2019s a little rich that an OpenAI employee is taking the high ground on AI predictions. Its head honcho Altman has repeatedly exaggerated the capabilities of his own tech and has also hyped AGI as something just around the corner; last year, he proclaimed<\/a> that AGI is achievable with \u201ccurrent hardware,\u201d for example. In the build up to the launch of OpenAI\u2019s newest GPT-5 model this summer \u2014 considered a massive disappointment<\/a> by many \u2014 Altman declared it a \u201csignificant step along the path to AGI.\u201d He even called the model \u201cgenerally intelligent.\u201d It\u2019s the same slimy salesmanship as Musk, only less stupid-sounding.<\/p>\n
