OpenAI has announced a brand-new AI-powered web browser, dubbed ChatGPT Atlas, which is now available globally.<\/p>\n

Perhaps most memorably, Atlas features an \u201cagent mode\u201d \u2014 initially limited to paying Plus, Pro, and Business users \u2014 that acts as a natural extension of OpenAI\u2019s forays into agentic AIs<\/a>, meaning models intended to autonomously complete tasks.<\/p>\n

In the context of a browser, that means that users can watch the AI move the cursor<\/a> as it navigates the intricacies of the web \u2014 for instance, in one demo OpenAI showed today, purchasing groceries on Safeway\u2019s website for an upcoming dinner.<\/p>\n

The company also used the opportunity to coin a new, cringe-inducing<\/a> term.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the same way that GPT-5 and Codex are these great tools for \u2018vibe coding,\u2019 we believe that we can start in the long run to have an amazing tool for \u2018vibe lifing,’\u201d promised OpenAI technical staffer Will Ellsworth during the stream. \u201cSo delegating all sorts of tasks, both in your personal and professional life, to the agent in Atlas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVibe lifing\u201d was meant as a direct response to \u201cvibe coding,\u201d a phrase coined by since-departed OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy earlier this year. The trend involves using AI to rapidly develop software using natural language prompts.<\/p>\n

But given the potentially disastrous consequences of handing the keys to your web browser to a hallucinating large language model, the risks are clear. AI browsers by OpenAI\u2019s competitors have already resulted in embarrassment as they turned out to be easily exploitable by bad actors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even Karpathy has acknowledged that vibe coding was never meant to be a feasible, long-term solution.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes the LLMs can\u2019t fix a bug, so I just work around it or ask for random changes until it goes away,\u201d he wrote in the\u00a0February tweet<\/a>\u00a0in which he first coined the term. \u201cIt\u2019s not too bad for throwaway weekend projects, but still quite amusing.\u201d<\/p>\n

How OpenAI\u2019s laissez-faire approach will translate to making important purchases or managing impactful life decisions \u2014 especially as hackers work to exploit the new tech<\/a> \u2014 remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s one thing to end up with a couple of hallucinated bugs in a mockup for a new piece of software you\u2019re working on \u2014 but another when you\u2019re giving an exploitable AI access to your wallet and personal information.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really excited to see all the unexpected and cool ways that you can use the agent in Atlas, and we\u2019re really excited to ship this,\u201d Ellsworth concluded during today\u2019s stream.<\/p>\n
