{"id":6115,"date":"2025-10-21T19:27:57","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T19:27:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/ai-slop-invading-spotify-discover-weekly-playlists\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T19:27:57","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T19:27:57","slug":"ai-slop-invading-spotify-discover-weekly-playlists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/ai-slop-invading-spotify-discover-weekly-playlists\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Slop Now Invading Spotify\u2019s Discover Weekly Lists"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Spotify is continuing to grapple with a tidal wave of AI slop that\u2019s frustrating its users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">While the company <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/future-society\/spotify-admits-overrun-ai-slop\">recently promised to address the issue<\/a> of AI impersonators and content farms that \u201cpush \u2018slop\u2019 into the ecosystem, and interfere with authentic artists working to build their careers,\u201d the platform\u2019s paying subscribers are increasingly fed up with being recommended slop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/search?q=ai%20discover%20weekly&amp;src=typed_query\" rel=\"nofollow\">quick search<\/a> on social media reveals that slop continues to find its way into users\u2019 Discover Weekly, which are personalized playlists that refresh every Monday to serve them new music based on their listening habits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cDiscover Weekly is unusable now cause it is just full of AI slop,\u201d one user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Merit__PI\/status\/1967074592884961778\" rel=\"nofollow\">complained on X-formerly-Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cDear Spotify, please stop putting AI music in my Discover Weekly. Sincerely, everyone,\u201d another <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/c12h23\/status\/1977771150957510914\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cI had no idea how bad it had gotten, since none of it was being shown to me,\u201d one user <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=45651800\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote on the forum <em>Hacker News<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThen a friend sent me his AI music on Spotify, I listened, and my recommendations were all AI for my usual genres suddenly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/community.spotify.com\/t5\/Music-Discussion\/Half-of-the-weekly-playlists-are-filled-with-AI-generated\/td-p\/6288755\" rel=\"nofollow\">August 2024 forum post on Spotify\u2019s Community page<\/a>, the issue has been around for well over a year now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cIt has gotten really bad lately,\u201d a subscriber wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/community.spotify.com\/t5\/Music-Discussion\/Half-of-the-weekly-playlists-are-filled-with-AI-generated\/m-p\/6551310\/highlight\/true#M20405\" rel=\"nofollow\">December post<\/a>. \u201cThis week\u2019s Discover Weekly has four [AI-generated] songs in the first five entries. It makes me very sad that this garbage penetrates the recommended playlists of users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Many users threatened to jump ship and leave Spotify altogether as a result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cSix songs out of 30 on my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify were AI this week,\u201d one user wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/nauris.bsky.social\/post\/3lzjco74yd22n\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bluesky post<\/a>. \u201cRidiculous that Spotify is pushing this crap on us. Looks like that\u2019s it for Spotify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">It\u2019s a damning trend, with Spotify\u2019s algorithm actively recommending slop to users who are paying monthly for a Premium subscription.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cSpotify has been recommending me so much AI music in my Discover Weekly that I can\u2019t even rely on it for finding new songs anymore,\u201d another <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/bastilas.bsky.social\/post\/3lrtatya2lc2h\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bluesky user lamented<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">In the face of it all, Spotify has refused to implement a blanket ban on AI slop. In late September, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2025-09-25\/spotify-strengthens-ai-protections\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced a slew of new policies<\/a> to protect artists against \u201cspam, impersonation, and deception,\u201d including a new \u201cfilter\u201d that it says can detect common tactics used by spammers to game its royalties system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The company also promised to establish \u201cAI disclosures for music with industry-standard credits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">However, Spotify fell short of forbidding AI tunes entirely, arguing that \u201cmusic has always been shaped by technology\u201d and that \u201cat its best, AI is unlocking incredible new ways for artists to create music and for listeners to discover it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThis journey isn\u2019t new to us,\u201d the company wrote in its announcement at the time. \u201cWe\u2019ve invested massively in fighting spam over the past decade. In fact, in the past 12 months alone, a period marked by the explosion of generative AI tools, we\u2019ve removed over 75 million spammy tracks from Spotify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">While browsing their Discover Weekly playlists, users <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/rincewind.run\/post\/3lyh4jnza6k2p\" rel=\"nofollow\">are finding<\/a> \u201csongs with weird, all-caps artists with AI pictures in them.\u201d Others have <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/samutara.bsky.social\/post\/3lqml3jywrc2p\" rel=\"nofollow\">pointed out artists<\/a> with \u201cno text in bios\u201d and \u201cten plus releases each in 2025 alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Besides polluting Discover Weekly playlists, we\u2019ve also come across <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/future-society\/bon-iver-side-project-ai-slop-spotify\">AI-generated impersonations showing up in Spotify\u2019s New Releases playlists<\/a>, which are designed to automatically surface new music by known artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Earlier this year, a self-proclaimed \u201cindie rock band\u201d called\u00a0The Velvet Sundown <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/indie-band-hoax-ai-admit\">made headlines<\/a> after accumulating millions of streams. The \u201cband\u201d was later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/ai-band-the-velvet-sundown-confirm-ai-1235379354\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">revealed<\/a> to be an \u201congoing artistic provocation designed to challenge the boundaries of authorship, identity, and the future of music itself in the age of AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Spotify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/spotify-publishes-ai-generated-songs-from-dead-artists-without-permission\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">has also been caught<\/a> populating the profiles of long-dead artists with <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/spotify-ai-blaze-foley\">AI-generated songs<\/a> imitating their style.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">As reporter Kieran Press-Reynolds <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/thepitch\/spotifys-new-policy-wont-stop-the-wave-of-ai-slop\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">argued in a recent column for <em>Pitchfork<\/em><\/a>, the company likely isn\u2019t particularly incentivized to remove AI tracks from its platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cSpotify won\u2019t prohibit this music \u2014 not because it thinks it\u2019s innovative or ushering in a new era of technological futurism (the platform has never cared about culture) but simply because it\u2019s generating streams,\u201d Press-Reynolds wrote. \u201cIf the company actually wants to be transparent and control spam, they need to go way harder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\"><strong>More on Spotify:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/future-society\/bon-iver-side-project-ai-slop-spotify\"><em>Bon Iver Side Project\u2019s Spotify Page Features an AI Slop Song<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-slop-invading-spotify-discover-weekly-playlists\">AI Slop Now Invading Spotify\u2019s Discover Weekly Lists<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/\">Futurism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spotify is continuing to grapple with a tidal wave of AI slop that\u2019s frustrating its users.
