Part of OpenAI\u2019s defense strategy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/47b00423-1060-43c9-8c28-23631cb7a4d1\" rel=\"nofollow\">according to <em>The Financial Times<\/em><\/a>? Requesting that the family cough up details of the teen\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">As the <em>FT <\/em>reports, OpenAI\u2019s lawyers have pushed the Raine family to provide a list of people who attended Adam\u2019s funeral, as well as material like eulogies and photos and videos captured at the service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">OpenAI asked for \u201call documents relating to memorial services or events in the honor of the decedent including but not limited to any videos or photographs taken, or eulogies given,\u201d read a document reviewed by the <em>FT<\/em>,\u2009\u201das well as invitation or attendance lists or guestbooks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Per the report, lawyers for the family characterized the request as \u201cunusual\u201d and \u201cintentional harassment,\u201d hinting that OpenAI might seek to subpoena pretty much everyone in Adam\u2019s orbit as it seeks to prove that its chatbot wasn\u2019t responsible for the suicide of a teen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThis goes from a case about recklessness to willfulness,\u201d Jay Edelson, a lawyer for the family, told the<em> FT<\/em>. \u201cAdam died as a result of deliberate intentional conduct by OpenAI, which makes it into a fundamentally different case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">OpenAI didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment<em> <\/em>about the request; it\u2019s unclear why its lawyers believe these materials are necessary as it seeks to prove that it shouldn\u2019t be held liable for the 16-year-old\u2019s tragic death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Critics, meanwhile, have taken to social media to express disgust and bewilderment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThis is absolutely sickening,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ednewtonrex\/status\/1981094011965493621\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> musician and ethical AI training advocate Ed Newton-Rex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Se\u00e1n \u00d3 h\u00c9igeartaigh, an AI risk researcher and professor at the University of Cambridge, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/S_OhEigeartaigh\" rel=\"nofollow\">added<\/a> a succinct: \u201cWhat on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cBut, let\u2019s trust [OpenAI CEO Sam Altman] and OpenAI to lead us into one perfect AGI future,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Grady_Booch\/status\/1981102681331814881\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a> Grady Booch, who leads software engineering at IBM Research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Adam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/26\/technology\/chatgpt-openai-suicide.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">died by suicide in April of this year<\/a>. After discovering him dead in his room, the teen\u2019s parents found that he\u2019d carried out extensive discussions about his suicidality with the chatbot, which had provided the teen with information about suicide methods \u2014\u00a0including how to effectively die by hanging, Adam\u2019s ultimate cause of death \u2014\u00a0and repeatedly discouraged him from sharing his deadly thoughts with his parents and other trusted loved ones. The Raine family sued OpenAI in late August, arguing that ChatGPT is a negligent product released recklessly to the public, and that Adam\u2019s death was the \u201cpredictable result of deliberate design choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Reporting about the bizarre OpenAI request for funeral materials comes amid the news that the Raine family <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-new-allegations-teen-death\">amended their legal complaint<\/a> to include striking new allegations that OpenAI repeatedly loosened ChatGPT guardrails around self-harm and suicide talk in the year leading up to Adam\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cOur deepest sympathies are with the Raine family for their unthinkable loss,\u201d OpenAI said in a statement regarding the amendment. \u201cTeen well-being is a top priority for us \u2014 minors deserve strong protections, especially in sensitive moments. We have safeguards in place today, such as surfacing crisis hotlines, re-routing sensitive conversations to safer models, nudging for breaks during long sessions, and we\u2019re continuing to strengthen them.
