Yesterday, Elon Musk\u2019s AI company xAI revealed what it calls Grokipedia: a competitor to Wikipedia, which Musk has criticized for being too \u201cwoke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Except, as The Verge<\/em> reports<\/a>, Grokipedia seems to be largely cribbed from Wikipedia, with many entries copied almost word for word from the online encyclopedia that Musk supposedly despises.<\/p>\n

Grokipedia\u2019s reliance on Wikipedia runs deep. Some pages<\/a> even admit that their \u201ccontent is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.\u201d Many, including the ones for common topics like Monday<\/a>, Apple<\/a>, and the PlayStation 5<\/a>, appear to be almost exact copies of their Wikipedia counterparts.<\/p>\n

And where pages differ, the changes often seem to be ideological in nature.<\/p>\n

For instance, as The Verge<\/em> points out, the climate change<\/a> entry removed most of the instances of the word \u201cunanimous\u201d to describe the overwhelming scientific consensus that human activities are to blame for rising global temperatures.<\/p>\n

Or consider the entry for president Donald Trump<\/a> \u2014 who was once Musk\u2019s close ally \u2014 which, as NBC News<\/em> points out<\/a>, makes no mention of Trump accepting an expensive jet from Qatar, a move widely characterized as a bribe<\/a>, or his disastrous meme coin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It also shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise that Musk\u2019s entry fails to mention that he made several Nazi salutes<\/a> at Donald Trump\u2019s post-inauguration celebration in January.<\/p>\n

Perhaps most egregiously, Wired <\/a><\/em>noticed<\/a>, a Grokipedia entry about slavery in the US contains a section pointing out \u201cideological justifications<\/a>\u201d for the enslavement of African Americans. Another entry<\/a> links gay pornography to the HIV\/AIDS epidemic.<\/p>\n

Its differences from Wikipedia can even have a meta component, as when Grokipedia\u2019s entry on Wikipedia claims that it has a \u201cleft-leaning slant in coverage of political figures and topics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wikimedia Foundation spokesperson Lauren Dickinson said in a widely shared<\/a> statement that Grokipedia simply wouldn\u2019t exist if it weren\u2019t for Wikipedia.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnlike newer projects, Wikipedia\u2019s strengths are clear: it has transparent policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a strong culture of continuous improvement,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Dickinson took aim at xAI\u2019s reliance on AI tech to collect knowledge on the internet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWikipedia\u2019s knowledge is \u2014 and always will be \u2014 human,\u201d she added. \u201cThrough open collaboration and consensus, people from all backgrounds build a neutral, living record of human understanding \u2014 one that reflects our diversity and collective curiosity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content,\u201d Dickinson wrote. \u201cEven Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Wikipedia relies on volunteers to keep its entries up to date, the way Grokipedia\u2019s entries are created and updated is murky at best. Case in point: some of its articles feature an \u201cedit\u201d button \u2014 but clicking it doesn\u2019t actually let users make changes.<\/p>\n
