What. Fun.<\/em>, which will premiere Dec. 3. An accompanying <a href=\"http:\/\/ohwhatfun.lnk.to\/soundtrack\" target=\"_blank\">soundtrack<\/a> is out the same day from Sony Music Masterworks.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Michael Showalter, <em>Oh. What. Fun.<\/em> stars Michelle Pfeiffer as a family matriarch accidentally separated from her family during the holidays. It reignited the compassion I hold for my mother and mothers everywhere who aspire to provide a place for their families to feel loved, appreciated, needed and relevant.\u201d As for her Pretenders cover, she says, \u201cI tried to honor Chrissie Hynde\u2019s version by collaborating with my band, the Attachment Theory. I hope if the Pretenders hear it, they feel our appreciation and love for Chrissie, the band and this song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also featured on the soundtrack is Tweedy\u2019s cover of the Band\u2019s \u201cChristmas Must Be Tonight,\u201d of which he says, \u201cthe Band pulled off the impossible. They wrote a Christmas song that\u2019s joyful and appropriate for the occasion while being strange, emotional and poetic. Who else would call baby Jesus \u2018the little stranger?\u2019 To me, this song gets at what this season is about, at its best: the light. \u2018Mary carried the light.\u2019 How are we making ourselves a light to each other? How do I bring light into my life? I start with a song like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, St. Vincent takes on \u201cHave Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,\u201d Fleet Foxes cover the late Elliott Smith\u2019s \u201cAngel in the Snow\u201d and the bird and the bee recast 10cc\u2019s \u201cThe Things We Do for Love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favorite Christmas songs have an underlying sense of melancholy mixed in with the warmth of their familiarity,\u201d St. Vincent\u2019s Annie Clark opines. \u201cSung by a person who is presumably alone, \u2018Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas\u2019 is a prime example: \u2019Next year all our troubles will be out of sight\u2019\u2026 the holiday season and its festivities are a temporary refuge, a reprieve after a shitty year.
