An AI-generated country song has topped<\/a> Billboard<\/em>\u2018s \u201cCountry Digital Song Sales<\/a>\u201d chart in the United States \u2014 once again highlighting how ubiquitous algorithmically generated music is becoming.<\/p>\n

The song, titled \u201cWalk My Walk,\u201d by a fictional group called Breaking Rust, tells an incredibly generic story about a man who has \u201cbeen beat down\u201d and got \u201cmud on my jeans,\u201d yet perseveres through it all. The song was accompanied by an AI slop video on Instagram<\/a>, showing a man in a cowboy hat heroically walking into the sunset.<\/p>\n

Despite the song\u2019s generic and uninspired nature, Breaking Rust has accumulated over two million monthly listeners on Spotify, where it\u2019s listed as a \u201cverified artist,\u201d despite having no bio. Several of its songs have been played over a million times. One single, which was released last month, has over 4.5 million listens.<\/p>\n

Spotify lists an individual named Aubierre Rivaldo Taylor as the group\u2019s \u201ccomposer\u201d and \u201clyricist.\u201d As Whiskey Riff<\/em> pointed out<\/a> last week, he has also been generating raunchy AI slop music under the pseudonym \u201cDefbeatsai,\u201d which has released songs with titles including \u201cMorning Wood,\u201d \u201cHer Blessed Juice,\u201d and \u201cKreme Queen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The news comes after Billboard<\/em> announced<\/a> earlier this month that at least one AI or AI-assisted artist<\/a> has charted over each of the preceding four weeks, a \u201cstreak suggesting this trend is quickly accelerating.\u201d<\/p>\n

The industry hasn\u2019t held back, signing multi-million-dollar deals<\/a> with AI artists. Even Universal Music Group, a major label that has been caught up in fierce copyright infringement lawsuits<\/a> over the use of AI, announced<\/a> that it had struck a licensing deal with AI music generation app Udio for an upcoming AI creation platform.<\/p>\n

Spotify, in particular, has been in the spotlight over a tidal wave of AI slop hitting the platform<\/a>. The company recently announced new policies<\/a>\u00a0to protect artists against \u201cspam, impersonation, and deception,\u201d but stopped short of banning AI music outright.<\/p>\n

Breaking Rust is far from the first fictional AI group to gain widespread attention. Earlier this year, an \u201cindie rock band\u201d called The Velvet Sundown<\/a> made headlines after it turned out to be<\/a> a \u201csynthetic music project,\u201d designed to be an \u201congoing artistic provocation.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a worrying trend, as real music artists continue to struggle to break out and make a living.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI bands are going to make it even harder for real human artists to break through and get a following, at least using streaming apps like Apple Music, Spotify, etc.\u201d Indiana University assistant professor of music technology Jason Palamara told Newsweek<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n
