Episode 9 starts very strongly, in 1995 at Abbey Road and the last time the Fab Three are taped for the show. Paul is playing the drums while Ringo is mic-d up for the interview. He\u2019s not having it. \u201cWhat have I told you?\u201d he scolds.<\/p>\n

Feelings<\/strong><\/p>\n

Director Oliver Murray wanted to concentrate on how The Beatles felt<\/em> about things and there\u2019s plenty of feelings here. Warm (\u201cI had three brothers,\u201d says only child Ringo of his time in the band). Candid (\u201cWe weren\u2019t talking much,\u201d says George of the possibility of an Anthology<\/em>-style project in 1975. Adds Paul \u201cWe were at war\u2026\u201d). Amusing (\u201cI liked the Beatles,\u201d says Paul. \u201cI\u2019m not ashamed of that\u2026\u201d).<\/p>\n

George Martin playback<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the Abbey Road \u201cPenthouse\u201d, producer George Martin plays the Fabs some Anthology mixes. Elsewhere, he explains how they have all found it \u201ctraumatic\u201d listening back to their past work. All this insight he dispenses while wearing a v neck jumper bearing the logo \u201cAlderney Sailing Club\u201d. \u00a0<\/p>\n

June 8, 1994<\/strong><\/p>\n

The surviving Beatles and their wives pay a visit to the edit suite to see how things are going on Anthology<\/em>. This is the source of the amusing exchange between George Harrison and Paul McCartney much extracted online: \u201cIs that a vegetarian<\/em> leather jacket?\u201d \u201cYes. And vegetarian boots.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Wilburys role in \u201cFree As A Bird\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

George explains that the Traveling Wilburys recently had a plan to have Elvis Presley (in tape recorded form) replace Roy Orbison on a new song. Jeff Lynne worked something like the magic on a Presley vocal he would later bring to John Lennon\u2019s \u201cFree As A Bird\u201d demo. And he evidently did all this this using a computer which looks like the TV your parents have in the spare room.<\/p>\n

Beatle boots\u2026the origin story<\/strong><\/p>\n

The inspiration for Beatle boots came, George reveals, from an unnamed \u201cBritish band\u201d (we\u2019re saying Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers) in Hamburg. This unnamed musician suggested the admiring bands swing by Anello and Davide in London, and have some made.<\/p>\n

Quite a good \u201cproducer\u201d joke<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paul: \u201cHow many producers does it take to change a lightbulb?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeff Lynne: 18?<\/p>\n

Paul: \u201cI dunno, what do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, it is his studio\u2026<\/p>\n

The hint of \u201cNow And Then\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

We see the Beatles recording \u201cFree As A Bird\u201d and working on \u201cReal Love\u201d a year later. It\u2019s a particular thrill to watch them working on an early \u201cNow And Then\u201d \u2013 though it needs more work. \u201cWe\u2019re a bit terrified about it,\u201d 1995 Paul says, as they figure out what it needs. \u201cYoko would have to allow us to chop it up. It might not go away that one.\u201d<\/p>\n

The wisdom of George Harrison<\/strong><\/p>\n

Very much the view of someone who has reflected deeply on things. \u201cThe Beatles will go on in people\u2019s minds. It exists without us,\u201d he says. He wishes John had also been granted to have 25 years to get over the experience of being in The Beatles: \u201cWe\u2019ve had the opportunity to get together again in a new light\u201d<\/p>\n
