\n\tThe founder of El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico<\/a>, Rafael Ithier, has died<\/a>, but the legacy of the salsa orchestra as one of the most recognized in Latin America will live on through dozens of hits \u2014 from 1975\u2019s \u201cUn Verano en Nueva York,\u201d which has found new life through Bad Bunny<\/a>, to \u201cMe Liber\u00e9\u201d and \u201cSe Nos Perdi\u00f3 el Amor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFounded in 1962 by Ithier, who was for many years the pianist and musical director of the orchestra, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico was born out of the breakup of Rafael Cortijo\u00a0y su Combo, with some members of the disbanded group brought together by Gema Records for a recording. Since then, they have made generations dance to classics such as \u201c\u00c1mame,\u201d \u201cBrujer\u00eda,\u201d \u201cFalsar\u00eda,\u201d \u201cHojas Blancas,\u201d \u201cGotas de Lluvia,\u201d \u201cLa Muerte,\u201d \u201cSe Me Fue,\u201d \u201cLa Fiesta de Pilito,\u201d \u201cEl Men\u00fa,\u201d \u201cNo Hay Cama Pa\u2019 Tanta Gente,\u201d \u201cJulia,\u201d \u201cY No Hago M\u00e1s Na\u2019,\u201d and many more!<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Billboard<\/em>\u2018s Tropical Airplay<\/a> chart alone, they\u2019ve placed 41 songs \u2014 the second-highest number for a group since the ranking launched in 1994 (behind Grupo Man\u00eda\u2019s 50 entries). Of those, 15 reached the top 10, and two hit No. 1: \u201cMe Liber\u00e9,\u201d which gave the group its longest leadership on the chart with three weeks at the top in 2001, and \u201cSe Nos Perdi\u00f3 el Amor\u201d the following year.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong other achievements, they had 22 songs on Hot Latin Songs between 1986 and 2005, two of which reached the top 10: \u201cC\u00fapido\u201d and \u201c\u00c1mame,\u201d which peaked at No. 8 in 1988 and 1989, respectively. They also have 10 entries on Top Latin Albums, five of which reached the top 10, with Salsa: Un Homenaje a El Gran Combo<\/em> earning them their best position in 2010 at No. 3.<\/p>\n

\n\tNicknamed the \u201cUniversity of Salsa,\u201d the group also holds several Billboard<\/em> records: most entries for a group on the Top Tropical Albums chart, with 22; most top 10s on the same chart for a group, with 19; and most No. 1s on Top Tropical Albums for a group, with a total of 10. Additionally, their album Y Su Pueblo<\/em> held the record for most weeks at No. 1 on Top Tropical Albums for a group since its debut in 1985 until December 1992, with 16 weeks at the top.<\/p>\n
