As generative AI seeps into virtually every aspect of our daily lives through jobs<\/a>, entertainment<\/a>, and even food<\/a>, you gotta wonder: is anyone not <\/em>on board with the AI takeover?<\/p>\n

Apparently not. Former McKinsey analyst turned Dartmouth University professor Scott Anthony told Fortune<\/em><\/a> that one of the feelings he\u2019s seeing more and more among college students isn\u2019t excitement for the AI future, but utter terror.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things that really surprises me consistently is how scared our students are of using it,\u201d Anthony said of large language models (LLMs). The fear isn\u2019t just over typical academic issues like cheating, he told Fortune<\/em>, but about losing their critical thinking skills to the machine \u2014 they\u2019re \u201cscared full stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something about AI where people, I think, worry that they\u2019ll lose their humanity if they lean too much into it,\u201d Anthony explained. \u201cHistory teaches me very clearly that in the middle of a change like this, it\u2019s very messy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Dartmouth prof contrasted his student\u2019s anxieties to those of his fellow tenured professors, who are typically eager to try out the latest LLM software. It\u2019s not hard to see why this is the case \u2014 with a cushy gig at one of the nation\u2019s elite universities, Dartmouth faculty are free from the economic horror story that is the AI boom. For students entering today\u2019s job market, the future looks far less secure.<\/p>\n

But even beyond career viability, students\u2019 anxieties that AI use could make them dumber aren\u2019t unfounded. One headline-inducing study<\/a> from MIT earlier this summer split participants into three groups to compete tasks like writing essays: one which used LLMs, one which used common search engines, and one \u201cbrain only group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Compared to the other groups, the researchers found that the LLM group had an easier time writing their essays, though this \u201ccame at a cognitive cost, diminishing users\u2019 inclination to critically evaluate the LLM\u2019s output or \u2018opinions,’\u201d the paper explained. Basically, the group using AI gravitated toward an echo chamber moderated by AI, not by their own brains.<\/p>\n

On top of that, participants in the brain-only group reported \u201chigher satisfaction\u201d with their essays, and \u201cdemonstrated higher brain connectivity\u201d than the others. <\/p>\n

In other words, it seems Gen Z has a right to be scared.<\/p>\n
