Last week, multiple Vervet monkeys, which are native to sub-Saharan Africa, were spotted roaming the streets of St. Louis, Missouri, alarming officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Nobody knows how many of them there are, or where they even came from. It\u2019s also illegal to own Vervet monkeys in the city, so if they\u2019re escaped pets, the owner may not own up to having lost them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThis is the first time we\u2019ve had a situation dealing with monkeys at large in the city of St. Louis,\u201d Department of Health environmental bureau chief Justen Hauser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/article\/news\/local\/st-louis-4-monkeys-loose\/63-902dbb5b-3a04-4b41-8384-b92eb4338a2c\" rel=\"nofollow\">told <em>NBC News<\/em>-affiliate<\/a> <em>KSDK<\/em> on January 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">But besides the innate challenges of capturing the agile mammals \u2014 as well as an <a href=\"https:\/\/fox2now.com\/news\/missouri\/goat-on-the-run-in-st-louis-multiple-monkeys-still-as-well\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">escaped goat<\/a> also on the loose in the Mound City \u2014 the St. Louis Department of Health is being frustrated by a novel hindrance: generative AI slop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">As the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/monkeys-st-louis-96c55834c7f17854cc4362db891ca8fa\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Associated Press<\/em> reports<\/a>, AI-generated images are complicating rescue efforts because residents have been posting fake images online, claiming to have spotted the monkeys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a lot in regard to AI and what\u2019s genuine and what\u2019s not,\u201d city Department of Health spokesperson Willie Springer told the <em>AP<\/em>. \u201cPeople are just having fun. Like, I don\u2019t think anyone means harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">AI-generated images circulating on X-formerly-Twitter show the monkeys <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/snafu128\/status\/2011077433261273439\" rel=\"nofollow\">joining a local gang<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Winny29751810\/status\/2010092757529047440\" rel=\"nofollow\">hanging out on the stoop<\/a>. Another shows them <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rooster3631\/status\/2010148308707168485\" rel=\"nofollow\">drinking out of 40-ounce malt liquor bottles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">While many of the images were intended as a joke, AI-based image generators have advanced to the point where they could easily come up with realistic-looking images of escaped monkeys as well, leading officials on a goose chase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Springer admitted that they don\u2019t even know how many monkeys are on the loose, saying that there could be up to four of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cOriginal reports suggested there were four animals, but we cannot confirm an actual number at this time, only that there is more than one,\u201d Hauser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp3zq7evw21o\" rel=\"nofollow\">told the <em>BBC<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Experts at the St. Louis Zoo have since joined the efforts, warning that residents should leave the monkeys alone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThe monkeys can be intelligent but also unpredictable at times,\u201d Hauser told <em>KSDK<\/em> last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Apart from complicating escaped monkey rescue efforts, generative AI has already turned into a major headache for officials.
