Rumors are running rampant online that Matt and Ross Duffer used OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT when producing the last season of \u201cStranger Things\u201d after fans zoomed on a still from a behind-the-scenes documentary<\/a> that appears to show that one of the brothers had the AI chatbot open while working on the script.<\/p>\n

\u201cWTF man, now we know why season 5 sucked,\u201d wrote<\/a> one upset fan of the show on X-formerly-Twitter in response.<\/p>\n

Martina Radwan, director of the documentary \u201cOne Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5,\u201d told The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>in a new interview<\/a> that she didn\u2019t witness anybody using ChatGPT in the tv show writer\u2019s room.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, of course not,\u201d she said. \u201cI witnessed creative exchanges. I witnessed conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, a person making a hagiographic documentary about the production of the show for Netflix probably isn\u2019t the world\u2019s most neutral source. And she doesn\u2019t quite shut the door on its use, either. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut to me it\u2019s like, doesn\u2019t everybody have it open, to just do quick research?\u201d she caveated in her hard-to-follow answer to the question.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, the online controversy and the interview show that many people who watch original entertainment don\u2019t want a whiff of AI around their favorite movies or shows, though some production companies have already made forays into its use, most prominently in \u201cde-aging\u201d actors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Controversies have erupted<\/a> online when AI use has been unearthed, including its use in tweaking actor Adrien Brody\u2019s Hungarian accent<\/a> in the movie \u201cThe Brutalist\u201d and for generating promotional posters<\/a> for director Alex Garland\u2019s movie \u201cCivil War.\u201d<\/p>\n

Viewers and industry experts should expect more of these flashpoints to erupt as Hollywood bigwigs debate<\/a> whether to use AI.<\/p>\n

Some are stridently against the tech \u2014 director Guillermo del Toro said he would rather die<\/a> than use it \u2014 but entertainment giants are rapidly jumping on board. Disney, for instance, recently signed a $1 billion licensing deal<\/a> with OpenAI, which will allow users to play with Disney-owned characters in OpenAI\u2019s video generator Sora.<\/p>\n

The debate is far from over, though. Big tech has already eaten journalism\u2019s lunch<\/a> \u2014 and perhaps Hollywood is next on the menu.<\/p>\n
