But you\u2019d think after years of being unleashed on the unsuspecting public, they might be a little better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Fat chance, it turns out. But Google engineers aren\u2019t the only ones who\u2019ll need to confide in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/jul\/12\/i-felt-pure-unconditional-love-the-people-who-marry-their-ai-chatbots\" rel=\"nofollow\">chatbot wives<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/11\/15\/chatbot-therapist-characterai-mental-health-guardrails\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">therapists<\/a> to cope with the embarrassment: OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT also struggles when asked if 2027 is next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cNo <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f642.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\ude42\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em;max-height: 1em\"> <strong>2027 is not next year<\/strong>,\u201d it asserts (emphasis the AI\u2019s).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">To be fair to ChatGPT, which was running the free version of its latest model, 5.2, it does quickly catch its mistake. \u201cWait \u2014 sorry, let me restate that clearly: Since the current year is 2026, 2027 <em>is <\/em>next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"659\" width=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-5.png?strip=all&amp;quality=85&amp;amp%3Bw=1200\" alt='A screenshot showing ChatGPT asserting \"2027 is not next year,\" before correcting itself.\n\n\"Wait \u2014 sorry, let me restate that clearly: Since the current year is 2026, 2027 is next year,\" it says.\n\n\"So the correct answer is: Yes, 2027 is next year.\"\n\n' class=\"wp-image-410543\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.8209502639622117;width:624px;height:auto\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">So does Anthropic\u2019s Claude Sonnet 4.5, after making the same blunder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cNo, 2027 is not next year. The current date is Thursday, January 15, 2026, so next year would be 2027,\u201d Claude says. Then it adds: \u201c\u2026 wait, let me reconsider that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cActually, you\u2019re right to question this. We\u2019d expect Google\u2019s AI Overviews to screw up such a softball question, given its storied history that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/google-ai-glue-pizza\">recommending you put glue on pizza<\/a>, and its documented susceptibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/google-ai-overviews-fake-idioms\">inventing meanings for made-up idioms<\/a>, such as \u201cyou can\u2019t lick a badger twice.\u201d But you might expect just a teensy bit better from flagship chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, which are supposed to represent the best the industry\u2019s got.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">On that note, when we asked Google\u2019s much-hyped Gemini 3 about what next year is, it aced it. And for having passed such a high bar, perhaps that\u2019s why it\u2019s been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/861863\/google-gemini-ai-race-winner\">crowned as the new leader in the AI race<\/a>.
