In case you needed further evidence that we\u2019re living in the worst version of a cyberpunk dystopia, immigration officers are now scanning civilians\u2019 faces to index them in a government database.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t take our word for it \u2014 just listen to the officers themselves. A video shared by freelance journalist Brian Allen<\/a> appears to show a masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent scan a couple\u2019s faces with his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not illegal to record,\u201d the woman filming the ICE agents says after the agent points his phone at her. \u201cExactly, that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing,\u201d another officer says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you taking my information down?\u201d the woman behind the camera asks. <\/p>\n

The officer responds: \u201cbecause we have a nice little database, and now you\u2019re considered domestic terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor video taping you? Are you crazy?\u201d the woman shoots back before the clip ends.<\/p>\n

When the woman asked why, the agent\u2019s response was basically: \u201cNow you\u2019re considered a domestic terrorist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether the two were actually registered in an ICE database is unclear. But the agency is definitely using facial identification tech in at least some ways. Back in October of last year, 404 Media <\/em>reported<\/a> that ICE was scanning suspects\u2019 faces to check whether they were citizens, a development which Cato Institute senior fellow Patrick Eddington warned at the time<\/a> could cascade into a constitutional crisis. <\/p>\n

If what the officer in the video says is true, the agency may be using the tech for even further overreach.<\/p>\n

In a case flagged by journalist Julie DiCaro<\/a>, a Minnesota woman alleged in a legal filing<\/a> that an ICE agent approached her vehicle as she was observing them, addressed her by name, and warned her that ICE had \u201cfacial recognition technology.\u201d Three days later, the woman says she received a notice that her Global Entry or TSA-Pre Check status had been revoked.<\/p>\n
