\n\t\u201cThe idea for that song came from personal experience,\u201d Billy Steinberg said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times<\/em>, as chronicled in Fred Bronson\u2019s The Billboard Book of Number One Hits<\/em>, about Madonna<\/a>\u2019s \u201cLike a Virgin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI wasn\u2019t just trying to somehow get that racy word virgin<\/em> in a lyric,\u201d mused Steinberg, who co-authored the song with longtime writing partner Tom Kelly. \u201cI was saying that I may not really be a virgin \u2014 I\u2019ve been battered romantically and emotionally like many people \u2014 but I\u2019m starting a new relationship and it just feels so good it\u2019s healing all the wounds and making me feel like I\u2019ve never done this before, because it\u2019s so much deeper and more profound than anything I\u2019ve ever felt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe song ruled the Billboard Hot 100<\/a> for six weeks in 1984-85 and ranks as Madonna\u2019s biggest career hit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSteinberg\u2019s compositions became mainstays in the Hot 100\u2019s top 40 from the 1980s to the 2010s, recorded by acts also including the Bangles, Heart, JoJo, Cyndi Lauper and Demi Lovato, whose \u201cGive Your Heart a Break,\u201d which Steinberg co-wrote with Josh Alexander, also hit No. 1 on Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Pop Airplay chart in 2012.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn honor of Steinberg, who, as announced Feb. 16, died<\/a> in Los Angeles at age 75, here is a recap of his 15 biggest Hot 100 hits \u2014 including five No. 1s \u2014 as a songwriter, all enduring top 40 titles and, notably, all sung by women artists.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for \u201cLike a Virgin,\u201d after it was written, Bronson noted that Michael Ostin, then of Warner Brothers Records\u2019 A&R department, played it for Madonna, after hearing Kelly and Steinberg\u2019s demo, and she \u201cwent crazy, and immediately knew it was a song for her and that she could make a great record out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least.
