\n\tFrom Rub\u00e9n Blades and Marc Anthony to Grupo Niche, Elvis Crespo and Olga Ta\u00f1\u00f3n, major figures in Latin music mourned the loss of salsa pioneer Willie Col\u00f3n<\/a>, who died Saturday<\/a> (Feb. 21) in New York City at the age of 75.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are heartbroken by the passing of an icon whose sound transcended the dance floor and defined an era,\u201d Fania Records \u2014 the label that revolutionized Latin music by creating the \u201cSalsa\u201d genre, and which signed a promising Col\u00f3n when he was only 15 \u2014 said in a press release. \u201cA pillar of Fania Records, Willie helped bring Latin music from the streets of New York to audiences around the world. His music declared identity, pride, resistance, and joy. His music was not just heard; it was lived.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBlades, with whom Col\u00f3n formed a legendary duo in the \u201970s and \u201980s that produced the seminal salsa album Siembra<\/em>, shared the news of his former collaborator\u2019s death with disbelief. \u201cI have just confirmed what I was resisting to believe: Willie Col\u00f3n has indeed passed away. To his wife Julia, his children, family, and loved ones, I send my heartfelt condolences. \n\tMeanwhile, Celia Cruz\u2019s state highlighted and thanked <\/a>his work with the Queen of Salsa. \u201cWe will always treasure the magical moments that Willie and Celia shared, both on stage and in the studio. As the title of their iconic album together so aptly put it: \u2018Only they could have made this album.\u2019 Farewell, Willie. Your legacy and your music will resonate for eternity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPuerto Rican superstar Rauw Alejandro, whose 2024 album Cosa Nuestra<\/em> was inspired by Col\u00f3n\u2019s 1969 LP of the same name, posted<\/a> on his Instagram Stories: \u201cWillie\u2026 thank you. Thank you for paving the way when there was no way. For making the trombone a symbol, for giving salsa its streetwise edge and soul, and for making your music an identity for so many people on the island, in New York, and throughout the diaspora.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cPersonally, your art inspired and guided me: it taught me that culture can also be modern, that creativity has no limits, that popular music can be sophisticated, and that music, when made with truth, lasts forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSalsa icon Marc Anthony shared a photo in his Instagram Stories<\/a> of him singing alongside Col\u00f3n, accompanied by the text: \u201cMaestro, thank you for your legacy. Your music lives on forever. R.I.P. Willie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElvis Crespo issued an extensive press release mourning the legend\u2019s death. \u201cToday, the trombones of the Bronx inspire my gratitude to God and life for allowing me to hear the genius of an artist who communicated through his creativity and sensitivity. His influence is etched into my brain and my heart,\u201d expressed the merengue star. \u201cTHANK YOU, MAESTRO WILLIE COL\u00d3N, FOR YOUR ART!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVenezuelan salsa giant Oscar D\u2019Le\u00f3n sent his condolences \u201cto my people in the Bronx, to my beloved Puerto Rico, and to all of Latin America\u201d \u200b\u200bon his Instagram account. \u201cHow hard it is to say goodbye to a giant!\u201d he wrote<\/a>. \u201cToday salsa is in mourning, but I\u2019m sure heaven is celebrating, welcoming a great one. My great brother and colleague, Willie Col\u00f3n, has left us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe iconic Colombian salsa music band Grupo Niche also shared a heartfelt tribute<\/a> to whom they called an \u201cabsolute reference of our culture,\u201d with \u201csongs that marked generations, stories that became anthems, and an artistic force that forever transformed salsa.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPuerto Rican merengue star Olga Ta\u00f1\u00f3n expressed<\/a> her condolences to Col\u00f3n\u2019s loved ones: \u201cMaestro, the great Willie Col\u00f3n, rest in peace!!!!! To all of Don Willie\u2019s family and fans, my deepest condolences.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Latin Recording Academy highlighted the musician\u2019s legacy, which they honored with a special lifetime achievement award in 2004. \u201cToday, we bid farewell with deep sadness to salsa legend Willie Col\u00f3n \u2014 singer-songwriter, trombonist, arranger, and producer \u2014 recognized with our Award for Musical Excellence,\u201d the institution wrote on Instagram<\/a>. \u201cHis legacy transformed salsa by turning it into a global phenomenon, establishing a sound and aesthetic that defined an era and continues to inspire generations of artists. Rest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUrban music star Farruko posted a tribute on his social media alongside a black-and-white photo of him posing with the salsero. \u201cRest in peace, legend Willie Col\u00f3n, one of the Fathers of salsa. Respect, admiration, and legacy,\u201d he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tColombian singer-songwriter Fonseca, with whom Col\u00f3n collaborated on the 2008 song \u201cEstar Lejos,\u201d posted a carousel <\/a>of photos and videos of the two in the studio and on stage together. \u201cLife gave me the privilege of sharing many moments with Maestro Willie Col\u00f3n,\u201d he wrote. \u201cMusic never dies, and the songs of the great Willie Col\u00f3n will live forever. What a legacy you left us, dear Willie; I cherish the best memories.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSalsa star Jerry Rivera also had words of admiration and respect for Col\u00f3n. \u201cMore than a musician, he was an architect of the salsa movement, a visionary friend who gave identity and pride to our Latin culture,\u201d he wrote in his post<\/a>. \u201cHis legacy lives on in every groove, in every chorus sung with soul, and in every generation that continues to walk his path.\u201d<\/p>\n
