An AI \u201cfilmmaker\u201d was viciously mocked after begging his followers for ideas on what to make.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will have 30k to make a fully AI film, what\u2019s the plan?\u201d wrote the filmmaker, Ian Durar, in a tweet<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m supposed to have ideas by next week. cmon guys what do you want to see? I like sci-fi but it feels to obvious for AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nothing says creativity like crowdsourcing ideas on X, right? Reid Southen, a film concept artist, responded by lambasting the entire pursuit of AI filmmaking as \u201ccompletely unserious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got people with $30k begging the internet for ideas by next week because they have nothing of their own to say, it\u2019s just slop for the sake of slop,\u201d Southen fumed<\/a>. \u201cEmbarrassing state of affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPrime example of how tools don\u2019t make the filmmaker,\u201d echoed<\/a> actor Luke Barnett.<\/p>\n

Even other AI evangelists were embarrassed. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the wrong question to be asking dumbass. If you\u2019re gonna have 30k to make a film, you should be trying to find a script,\u201d scolded<\/a> Gregory Mandarano, a screenwriter who also describes himself as an AI artist.<\/p>\n

The ideas that Durar\u2019s followers came up with, by the way, were horrendous: a film about a tavern in \u201cOgreville\u201d where every Ogre knows your name; or \u201can epic sci-fi goontech adventure starting big titty Elsa and dumptruck Moana.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

AI is supposed to be the future of filmmaking and the arts. It will democratize it, boosters insist, and revolutionize it. Anytime someone posts one of those AI-generated videos with deepfaked actors in them is an occasion for legions of AI bros to sneer that Hollywood\u2019s days will soon be numbered.<\/p>\n

But if all that\u2019s the case, how come none of these AI \u201cartists\u201d seem to possess a single creative molecule in their body? Why is every AI video just a riff on existing stories<\/a>, mashing celebrities together like a kid with their dolls<\/a>? Why are their influences all actual artists and not other bozos typing a prompt into a text window who\u2019re convinced that they\u2019re also the next Stanley Kubrick? And even if someone genuinely creative leverages AI, any original thought they have gets smoothly averaged out into an algorithmic sludge that they didn\u2019t directly make. It\u2019s no longer an interesting extension of their own ideas, but of a a vast repository of reconstituted work by other humans.<\/p>\n

Durar, nonetheless, is adamant that\u2019s he\u2019s spearheading a revolution akin to digital photography\u2019s introduction into filmmaking. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll of those things became the norm, and so will AI,\u201d he wrote<\/a>. \u201cI may be early but I\u2019m never wrong. Get over it. It\u2019s just a tool.\u201d<\/p>\n
