Last week, Anthropic\u2019s CEO Dario Amodei publicly drew a line in the sand with the US military, insisting<\/a> that its AI models may not be used for mass surveillance of Americans or deadly autonomous weapons.<\/p>\n

The move infuriated officials at the Pentagon. Defense secretary Pete Hegseth came out in full force<\/a>, accusing Anthropic of trying to \u201cseize veto power over the operational decisions of the United States military\u201d and banning the company from ever doing any business with any US government entity, \u201ceffective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump ordered agencies to \u201cimmediately cease\u201d using Anthropic\u2019s technology on Friday, while simultaneously claiming that the tool will be phased out of all government work<\/a> over the next six months.<\/p>\n

But given the government\u2019s extensive use of the company\u2019s chatbot Claude during its deadly offensive in Iran, it\u2019s clearly having trouble making do without it. As The Washington Post<\/em> reports<\/a>, the US military is extensively using Palantir\u2019s Maven Smart System in the conflict, which has had Anthropic\u2019s Claude chatbot integrated since 2024.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Wall Street Journal<\/em> first reported<\/a> on the Pentagon\u2019s use of Claude to select attack targets in Iran, hours after the White House announced its ban.<\/p>\n

According to WaPo<\/em>\u2018s sources, the system spits out precise location coordinates for missile strikes and prioritizes them by importance. Maven was also used during the US military\u2019s invasion of Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n

Center Command is \u201cheavily using\u201d the Maven system, Navy admiral Liam Hulin told WaPo<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Military commanders told the newspaper that the military will continue using Anthropic\u2019s tech, regardless of the president ordering them not to, until a viable replacement emerges.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether his morals are right or wrong or whatever, we\u2019re not going to let [Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei\u2019s] decision-making cost a single American life,\u201d a source told WaPo<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen whether OpenAI will swoop in to fill Anthropic\u2019s place. After Amodei\u2019s falling out with the Pentagon, CEO Sam Altman saw an opportunity to strike<\/a> last week and signed a contract with the Department of Defense \u2014 a move that triggered an enormous and ongoing PR crisis<\/a> and sent uninstalls of ChatGPT soaring.<\/p>\n

Whatever the chatbot of choice for military commanders may end up being, the rampant use of AI in war has taken researchers aback. For one, even the most sophisticated chatbots still struggle with the very basics and continue to be haunted by rampant hallucinations<\/a>. That could have immense implications when it comes to matters of life and death.<\/p>\n

So far, the offensive in Iran has resulted in the killing of many hundreds of Iranian civilians<\/a>, as well as six American soldiers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe key paradigm shift is that AI enables the US military to develop targeting packages at machine speed rather than human speed,\u201d Center for a New American Security executive vice president Paul Scharre told WP<\/em>. <\/p>\n

But \u201cAI gets it wrong,\u201d he added. \u201cWe need humans to check the output of generative AI when the stakes are life and death.\u201d<\/p>\n
